Let me just preface this post with a little background... I am not an Apple fanboy, I prefer to not pick sides when it comes to tech companies. I have an iPhone 5, an Android Nexus 7 a Retina MacBook Pro and a Windows 7 gaming PC. I also dual boot Linux and Windows on my PC and Mac OS X and Windows on my laptop.
What I am trying to understand, is why people hate Apple so much (particularly their laptops), and how this irrational hatred blinds people from using/ enjoying a product that they might come to like if they gave it a chance.
I like Apple's portable products because they are extremely stable, extremely reliable and yes, "they just work." When it comes to a college laptop, I would never choose anything other than a Mac. I need something that is dead reliable, is portable, powerful for the size and has exceptional battery life. I don't have time to deal with missing drivers and DLL files, defragging my hard disk, deleting temp files, running anti- virus software etc. basically all the effort involved in preventing what I refer to as "Windows rot" (when you run Windows on a computer for an extended period of time and it gets slower... and slower... and slower)
I am a majoring in computer science, and everyone knows that a UNIX based OS is better for programming overall. I have the only computer that can run Windows, Mac OS X and Linux and triple boot between the three. I am the only one (aside from other Mac users) that doesn't have to bring my power brick with me to class and plug in halfway through.
In general, my MacBook has fewer hardware issues than people I know with comparably priced PC laptops. My friend has a 6 month old Toshiba with a broken trackpad (he uses a mouse) and the machine has been treated with extreme care. My other friend has a Dell in which the comma key doesn't work (also a new machine, treated with care).
No one has yet to make a trackpad as nice as the glass trackpad thats been on the MacBook for years. You can get a PC laptop that has the same specs as my MacBook for much less, but with this lower price you typically get a much lower resolution screen (typically a nasty TN panel) and an overall cheaper build. I have noticed that a comparable Asus laptop (in terms of build and similar specs) doesn't actually cost that much less than my MacBook.
What I am trying to say, is that for me, a MacBook is a perfect fit. For a school laptop, you really can't beat one for build quality, battery life and stability. For those who complain that Apple locks you into their ecosystem, install Linux and Windows. Problem solved. I constantly get berated by members of the "PC Master Race" for my MacBook. I constantly get asked when people pass my dorm room "how on earth are you playing games like that, on a Mac?" because people think I am running Intel HD 3000 instead of Intel Iris graphics for some reason, because "its a Mac."
I am an advocate for all technology companies. Knowing how much work goes into software development and programming, I respect Microsoft, Apple, Google, Linux etc. equally.
I wish people would stop criticizing each others technology choices, and realize that just because you prefer one thing, doesn't mean everyone does.
