Why all the Mac hate?

Let me just preface this post with a little background... I am not an Apple fanboy, I prefer to not pick sides when it comes to tech companies.  I have an iPhone 5, an Android Nexus 7 a Retina MacBook Pro and a Windows 7 gaming PC.  I also dual boot Linux and Windows on my PC and Mac OS X and Windows on my laptop.

What I am trying to understand, is why people hate Apple so much (particularly their laptops), and how this irrational hatred blinds people from using/ enjoying a product that they might come to like if they gave it a chance.

I like Apple's portable products because they are extremely stable, extremely reliable and yes, "they just work."  When it comes to a college laptop, I would never choose anything other than a Mac.  I need something that is dead reliable, is portable, powerful for the size and has exceptional battery life.  I don't have time to deal with missing drivers and DLL files, defragging my hard disk, deleting temp files, running anti- virus software etc. basically all the effort involved in preventing what I refer to as "Windows rot" (when you run Windows on a computer for an extended period of time and it gets slower... and slower... and slower)

I am a majoring in computer science, and everyone knows that a UNIX based OS is better for programming overall.  I have the only computer that can run Windows, Mac OS X and Linux and triple boot between the three.  I am the only one (aside from other Mac users) that doesn't have to bring my power brick with me to class and plug in halfway through.

In general, my MacBook has fewer hardware issues than people I know with comparably priced PC laptops.  My friend has a 6 month old Toshiba with a broken trackpad (he uses a mouse) and the machine has been treated with extreme care.  My other friend has a Dell in which the comma key doesn't work (also a new machine, treated with care).

No one has yet to make a trackpad as nice as the glass trackpad thats been on the MacBook for years.  You can get a PC laptop that has the same specs as my MacBook for much less, but with this lower price you typically get a much lower resolution screen (typically a nasty TN panel) and an overall cheaper build.  I have noticed that a comparable Asus laptop (in terms of build and similar specs) doesn't actually cost that much less than my MacBook.

What I am trying to say, is that for me, a MacBook is a perfect fit.  For a school laptop, you really can't beat one for build quality, battery life and stability.  For those who complain that Apple locks you into their ecosystem, install Linux and Windows.  Problem solved.  I constantly get berated by members of the "PC Master Race" for my MacBook.  I constantly get asked when people pass my dorm room "how on earth are you playing games like that, on a Mac?" because people think I am running Intel HD 3000 instead of Intel Iris graphics for some reason, because "its a Mac."

I am an advocate for all technology companies.  Knowing how much work goes into software development and programming, I respect Microsoft, Apple, Google, Linux etc. equally.

I wish people would stop criticizing each others technology choices, and realize that just because you prefer one thing, doesn't mean everyone does.

good for you?

I believe most of the "hate" in this forum is from Apple as a company and not necessarily there products. I personally just hate when people brag about those products for fake reasons. Things like "macs don't get virus's" or "there just better". Each piece of technology is a tool, and you have to have the right tool for the right job. I like having flexible technology, and Macs are not flexible. But that is just my humble opinion. I try not to hate on them too much, I'm like you, I enjoy all technology.

I gave Apple a chance with iOS and even their OS and it is really crappy hence the word CrApple. The tower Macs had a horrible form factor (why would someone use a riser card for a CPU on a consumer desktop?), once you jump into the Apple ecosystem there is no way on leaving unless you do something radical, and the pure ignorance that comes with Apple fanboys just pisses me off. Oooooo a "Sapphire Glass" that makes the camera so amazing........... Yeah no, its the sensor. The only thing I think Apple did great on was the old iPod Classic/Video with the click wheels. Other then that, they destroy innovation by patenting after patenting stupid stuff.

"I like Apple's portable products because they are extremely stable, extremely reliable and yes, "they just work."  When it comes to a college laptop, I would never choose anything other than a Mac.  I need something that is dead reliable, is portable, powerful for the size and has exceptional battery life." Ummmmmmmmmmmmm Dell ultrabooks? HP ultrabooks? Any company ultrabooks?

"I don't have time to deal with missing drivers and DLL files, defragging my hard disk, deleting temp files, running anti- virus software etc. basically all the effort involved in preventing what I refer to as "Windows rot" (when you run Windows on a computer for an extended period of time and it gets slower... and slower... and slower)" I just facepalmed right here. You realize that any company that you buy a computer from gives you the drivers off their website and will give you the CD? You still have to defrag with Mac. I dont run any anti-viruses because I know the websites I download from arent virus infected. This is pure ignorant Mac mindset right there.

My iOS calendar and contacts sync to my Android tablet.  Their ecosystems are not as locked down as you think.

What you have to do is stop caring what other people say and think.  The "Mac hate" you speak of, as it is with most things involving people bitching, is from a vocal minority.  You have people that hate what they don't have or don't understand.  It's jealousy and ignorance.  It is irrational.  You're attempting to understand irrational behavior.  For your sanity, don't.

As for your assertion that people hate on Apple, particularly their laptops, I just don't see it outside the minority or the uninformed.  People buy refreshes of Apple products year, after year, after year.  As UnholyKing says, most of the hate it directed at the company and not the products.  The best laptop I owned was a Macbook Pro.  I dual boot OSX and Windows on it and it was great.  It was ridiculously expensive, but the engineering was fantastic.

Let the haters hate, and be comfortable knowing that you're above that crap.

Right like how you can now install a custom keyboard on iOS?

the click wheel was actually from a sound blaster mp3 player that they had to pay royalties too. lol

Also, I don't have to defrag a mac (or Linux for that matter).  Never have, never will.  Using both a Mac and a PC and Linux on a daily basis for years might give me more of a perspective.

I have 2 Macs. Computers are tools regardless of their name brand.

I'm pretty sure you can with iOS 8 now? Or 7?

I'm almost certain one of the latest releases let you do that though.

You still need to defrag regardless, unless you use an SSD.

even then, I still think those iPod Classic/Video were the best thing Apple could come up with. I still have one lying around but I never boot up anymore. I also modded it with RockBox.

Its iOS 8 now and after so many years with the OS being released they finally let people make custom keyboards? *Slow applause* iOS keyboard has a retarded layout dealing with capital lettering. Android IMO is years better than iOS

Agreed on most points but osx does not need defrag because just like linux it keeps files from getting fragmented in the first place. Also macs do have significantly less viruses because less people use it so less people make viruses for osx, linux is the most virus proof. As for the hate I get irritated when apple fans try to say that apple products have good value when they don't and when they try to say that you get equal or better hardware for same price when you don't. Oh and windows does slow down over time because every program adds to the registry so you have to reinstall it every now and then. Linux is better thab osx for programming but osx is better than windows. Honestly if it wasn't for the fact that so many games just work on windows and the linux drivers are sub par I would just use linux oh and for the mac fan, the iris graphics is integrated and by intel, 2 signs that it is relatively low end.

To OP,

If you have come here to defend Apple and/or try to... enlighten people? You have come to the wrong forum. Not trying to be mean but that's just how it is here.

Then your dumb. Picture this, a room full of stuff that is just thrown to whatever spot gets placed. "Oh i need to find the screwdriver." Picture the room as your hard drive and the computer as you finding the screwdriver.

You still need to defrag it either way. HFS+ doesnt keep the clusters in check.

No one hates Mac there perfect for word and photoshop. Not much else though.
