Sir Christopher Lee, May he rest in Valhalla
I definitely agree. Great soft voice, especially on the newer albums and re-releases.
I never thought I'd see Niklas Kvarforth mentioned but I must agree. He's one of a kind in the distinct kind of singing, singing and screaming he does. Works great with the other instruments to make the music even more powerful. But it's a band/vocalist everyone would enjoy.
Two awe inspiring musicians that inspired me to play music. That and the multi genre blend is fantastic. If I could blend genres as well as they do...I don't think I'd ever leave a studio.
October Falls' vocalist Mikko Lehto also has an odd technique, which I think works absolutely wonderfully with their style of music.
(Hop 2 minutes in if you just want to hear the vocals)
Mikkel Sandager, formal vocalist of the band Mercenary (Melodic Death with power metal vocals and screaming).
Check out their album The Hours That Remain.
Tomas Lindberg for his work on Slaughter of the Soul. Came across amazing there. Made me think for a while that everyone should sing like that.
Oh metal. Um...
Niklas Kvarforth - Shining
Chino Moreno - Deftones
James Ludbrook - Damaged
Mike Patton - Faith No More
Jens Kidman - Meshuggah
First five that came to my mind.
Russell Allen - Symphony X, Star One
Devin Townsend - Devin Townsend Band/Project, Strapping Young Lad
Einar Solberg - Leprous, Ihsahn (with Leprous as his band)
My top four would be Gylve "Fenriz" Nagell of Darkthrone, Brent Hinds of Mastodon, Gaahl of Gorgoroth, God seed and Wardruna (not a metal band but still good) and Johan Hegg of Amon Amarth.
For clean vocals, to me there wasn't anyone better than Khan who used to be in Kamelot. Didn't really care much for their newer stuff Ghost Opera and up but Karma and The Black Halo are just too good.
Christian Alvestam
Devin Townsend
Greg Puciato definetly. Puts on a great show. Also is jacked as fuck.
Till Lindemann from Rammstein
I feel like I'm gonna catch a TON of hate for this, but my favorite is Anders Fridén of In Flames. His lyrical style is so emotional, it definitely doesn't follow any proper form or methodology but I can really feel the emotion in it unlike most singers who sing 'properly' he turns a cracking voice into an art form
Other favorites that vary from mood to mood
Peter Tagtgren of Hypocrisy, his style is very atmospherical makes you feel like you're in hell or something
Tomas Linburg, for mastering sounding like he's being murdered whilst singing
Chuck Schuldiner (did it really take 35 posts to mention him lol)
Karl Willets
Per "Dead" Ohlin
Paul Baloff
Haha good ol Paul. When it comes to Exodus, I'm more of a Souza fan. Still love their early stuff with Baloff though.
Else it is Jens Kidman, but I think it has to do with the overall package of the band, more than him in particular.
Representing the old school would be Messiah Marcolin or King Diamond. Coin flip, there you go;
Lemmy is not metal. He would beat you to death with his bass if he heard you say that. Lemmy is Rock'n'Roll incarnate. Not merely a singer.
I'm surprised that Maynard James Keenan hasn't been mentioned , he may not be the best but he should be on the list , he wouldn't be a typical metal vocalist but damn does he have a crazy voice .
Jesse Leach, Killswitch Engage. Especially Alive Or Just Breathing; real emotion, inspiring themes, killer cleans and a certain fire I can't quite put my finger on.
