Isn’t that satellite?
Yes but it is unlimited data and relatively high bandwidth. Idk what your service is now but usually with Starlink the slowest I see is about 40-50Mbps.
And you can use your own router.
If just connecting between 2 computers ( for example a server and a remote console control computer) you dont need a router,
A crossover cable allows communication and security because you are not connected through a router
You speed is limited only by your network card.
If you use fiberoptic network cards your security if much better and much faster.
Yeah i know its old tech but highly dependable
( its how i control the remote server in my office trailor)
Crossover cables have been obsolete for almost 2 decades now. No need for them at all as the NIC and switches handle it automatically.
Connecting direct may offer “security” in that the PCs are not connected to the internet, but if one of them is connected to the internet then it offers no security at all. Because if that one internet connected PC becomes compromised then they can travel on and compromise that second computer
Gigabit Spec called, it says “Auto MDIX” is a thing now
I want to say since 1996, not certain on that
OK, so technically everyone needs a router in order to get from your subnet to the internet. I know that’s not your question, but us networking gurus gotta get that fact in.
For your current use case, you’re not wrong in that you (and the vast majority of people out there) are probably fine with the ISP supplied modem/router/wifi combo wonder box. However, just being on this forum puts you in a very small subset of population at large. We seek the deeper true true here.
Here are my reasons for running my own router, in my case a pfSense box.
- Troubleshooting, pfSense allows me broad and powerful troubleshooting capabilities. Have you ever had a connection issue where you’re not quite sure if it’s the wifi or the router? pfSense can help you figure out what the issue actually is.
- Reliability. Have you ever had to power cycle the router box because the internet is just not working for no explainable reason? With pfSense I never have to do that. The code base is exceptionally robust and just works for months and months without a hiccup.
- I can do more than the basic features of the ISP router. pfSense is great at being a basic router, but it can do so much more. Want to have a VPN, no problem. Setup ad blocking, sure. Encrypt your DNS traffic so the ISP isn’t snooping all of it, easy. Setup a man in the middle TLS scanner to inspect encrypted traffic that is passing across your network…well that’s a real advanced setup, but it’s totally possible.
Hope that helps with the why I like my pfSense box, not sure how much of it applies to the microtik you’re considering. Good luck with whatever you decide on.
I guess I’m a bit spoiled. Eastlink gives me up to 1Gbps. No data caps. Considering my household uses around two dozen internet devices it comes in handy. I know it seems strange being out in the bush, hours away from the nearest little city, and running that kind of band width but I’m not about to move and 40-50 Mbps gives me the shudders. I need another zero at the end of those numbers to be okay with something like that.
I am jealous of your internet lol
lol… I’m jealous of people who get to choose what router they get to use!
:::sigh::: Can’t have it all, I guess.
You can’t get an old, cheap PC, or an SBC like a pi? Just use the ISP router as a modem…
So for reference I am in a large metro area (Denver, CO) and I have 1Gbps FTTH a block away in every direction but for some reason I am stuck with Xfinity (Comcast) which is traditional coax cable. I pay $110/month for 1.3Gbps Down / 40Mbps up. I have to pay an extra $30 fee monthly for unlimited data. Also if I close my account with them before the end of my “introductory period” I have to pay cancellation fees. After my “intro period” I then have to argue and haggle with them to keep them from raising my rates by $20-$40 year over year from then on.
The FTTH company charges $60 flat with no data caps and no “intro period” BS.
I might be a bit salty…
Trust me. The cable guy and I had a chat about this and he told me if Eastlink discovers any modem manipulation in the way of hardware they’ll shut me down. In fact, they called me up to threaten me about discontinuing my service simply because I didn’t have a television. lol
The real question here should be, Who actually needs a T.V.?
I would check with FTTH to make absolutely sure they could deliver (sometimes they have exclusive rights to territory) and I’d pay the cancellation fees if they could. Data caps are codswallop and the extra bandwidth is already at your doorstep. It costs them next to nothing at no extra charge to let you have it but they deliberately meter it out for profit.
I remember the old days when people bought cable T.V. subscriptions because they got tired of all the commercials and wanted to watch commercial free television. It took but a few years to get everyone on cable and then they started dishing out the commercials all over again. Great idea. Make the consumer pay to watch commercials! Meh. It’s the same with the internet.
What in the actual hell!?
I have and I have also cross-referenced the FCC Broadband map. Doesn’t matter anyways, I am getting ready to move to San Diego so I get to do this song and dance all over again.
Yeah. one needs to be careful about those promos. I got the one with the “free” cable T.V. service coz it offered cheaper internet at faster speeds. I neglected to tell them I didn’t have a television and they really didn’t like that. What I should have told them when they called me was that my T.V. was broken and neglect telling them that I planned on that being a permanent thing.
Well do I know the song and dance. Alas, where I live I can’t be too picky. Not a lot in the way of providers up this way and satellite has never impressed me much.
I hope things pan out for you better in San Diego.
Just use box as a modem, and use your own behind as a router, I meant…
What does it matter if you have a tv or not … their getting paid for a service that your not using and don’t have to do jack all to maintain for the money they receive!
lol already have three switches and POE but I didn’t say this. * beep-beep * * boop *
You know that and I know that but the people who pay for those commercials are not pleased about it. Such irony. I refuse to use WiFi and I’m a cord cutter. lol
I refuse to use WiFi and I’m a cord cutter.
Wait … what?
