Whisk(e)y

halfassed but good cocktail:
shopping list:
whiskey of choice (smooth or spicy but we’re mixing, so no high shelf snifter glass stuff)

disaronno

“moonshine cherries”

cola

lime

rocks glass, 2 cubes.
1/4 whiskey, 1/4 disaronno, remainder: cola couple moonshine cherries up to your personal spill tolerance and squeeze a skeet of lime in there.

edit- i would personally avoid mr daniels for this one.

Never bothered trying Brandy on its own, though I’ve had a few Cognacs
… Blind crash coursing, with a few randos

Never had this before…
We shall see…

Gifted off a bottle [used to be hosted, in a 50cL bottling] - never got around trying it

It’s sweet. Lightly fruity sweet, not sharp sugary sweet.
But it’s really nice and light…
No sharpness what so ever. I like it …

Deeply disappointed.
The bottle is meh, the cork is rubber and there is actually a pour in the glass. It’s just that light in color.
The flavour is meh.
I can’t recommend it.
Compared to the Tullamore Cider Cask - the Irish is 100 times better drink.

So bad…

Mellow Corn is probably the better corn whiskey

I mean I had another glass and it’s really not awful… But I kinda expected more. Especially considering the fact it’s the same price as the Tullamore Cider…
I’m not mad, I’m just disappointed…

Today I shall taste Johnnie Walker Double Black today…

OK, this is … weird.
It’s definitely smokey. It’s much sharper and stronger flavor wise than the standard Black 12YO.
Smells like burned wood. It’s fine.
Tastes like ash and the aftertaste is insanely long, compared to the other whisk(e)ys I have tried.
I am loving the black. I am not sure I like this one.
People who likes smoked whisk(e)y may love it, bit it’s still too “strong” for me…

If dipping your toes, into them peatings, do look at Single malt sources
The mainland scotches, typically are less aggressive in nature, versus Islands
Either from reduced peat dried barley, or having some element of distraction

Benromach 10 / Highland Park 12 / Magnus, are accessible ones I’d vouch on
For testing the waters [Sherry finish/maturation, is a helpful distraction point]

Talisker [Islands], is heavy on maritime sensations, as its form of distraction

Bunna’ 12 / Classic Laddie [Islay], are helpful in non-peated / Peated compro.
[Peated equivalences, are Toitech and Port Charlotte, once you work nerves]

I preach for Islay mist. It’s a blended based on among others Laphroaig. If Laphroaig is 11, this is 8-9. Perfect when you want something really peaty but don’t have to impress anyone. Also, it’s like $10 less than Select.

Have younhad the standard green label DEW

My boss got that one to try it out.
Honestly I am hunting for Caol Ila 12 or Talisker 10 on sale to dip into those…

This is almost impossible to find over here…

That is pricy… I love the blue of that bottle but that is pricy for me…

Nope.
I mean I am 101% sure I have, I just haven’t paid attention to it.

Oban is another excellent Scotch for dipping toes into peat.

@psycho_666

Caol Ila is probably the best starting point for peated single malts. It’s what Johnny Walker uses for smokey flavor in their blends.

Oban stole my heart [+ I didn’t mind]. One of the BEST balanced Scotches “.”
… With that said, I do GREATLY mind, Diageo gone greedy with markups
I otherwise would’ve mentioned it, without a whiff of hesitation

Caol Ila is a great toe-dipper, when it comes to Islay haze [aka, Peaty Beatings]
They do have an unpeated make, but the price is a bit dumm, for trying out

@psycho_666 Yea, the Laddie does come off a bit pricey at times
Should have good opportunity, in a whisk(e)y friendly bar, to at least try it out
I would have a bit more of a bias, for the Bunna’ 12, between them two
Bunna’ also has an NAS make, that I almost forgot about [Stuireadair]

Its well worth it as a regular drinking whiskey

I have heard that from other people as well. Also the part about Johnnie Walker. Mentioned it to my coworkers and boss when he opened the Double Black… They looked weird at me…

I have heard that name as well. Never tried it tho…

I hope to open one next year, cause there is no such thing in my town…

I guess so, but the cider one is insanely delicious for the only 18€ I paid for it…

Oh Buffalo is nice…
Nowhere near as smooth and nice as Makers tho, but really good.

Did you taste any cherry in MM? Sommeliers keep saying they are tasting cherry in Mark and I don’t. I have tried to search for the flavor, no luck. I just can’t identify it.
