Ubuntu or Mint i'd say but this thread could definitely use Teebler's input,
There are so many to chose from, the world's most popular distro is Ubuntu. It's what I run, it's what I install on people computers that want a stable free OS. It's a good starting point as there are so many people using it. As you become more compitant you may with to try other things. That is after all the fun of Linux is messing about with different distro's and desktop enviroments.
As far as transitions go, ubuntu is the best in terms of a transition. Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Xubuntu, Linux Mint, anyother kind of ubuntu is just the ubuntu kernal combined with a different window manager. Xfce is light and customizable, kde is similar to xfce, gnome is closer to explorer than any of them, unity is there, cinnamon. It trally doesnt matter what you pick just look up a few reviews and pick one.
Debian is beter than ubuntu but you shouldn't jump to it right away, i personally skipped debian and went to arch.
I'd recommend xubuntu, it's what i used for the past semester. It's light, has great built in widgets, and has a painless install/learning curve.
I'd recommend the Linux Mint 14 Cinnamon version because it's simple and straightforward and is a derivative of Ubuntu but I find it to be a lot easier to use.
Ubuntu if you want a good place to start, Mint if you want everything done for you right away, Debian if you want a tiny bit more of a challenge and Fedora if you want a easy distro with the latest packages (unstable).
But if you REALLY want to know Linux, install Linux from scratch.
I'd also suggest Linux Mint 14 Cinnamon as well. I've been using it for quiet a few months now, and it's pretty great. Always used Ubuntu before, but grew against it with Unity being added. Every version Mint grows stronger and more feature rich. But their features are useful and practical on all systems.
xubuntu would be second choice for me. Elementary OS if you want Linux to hold your hand and be a little less daunting.
I really like Lubuntu and Xubuntu. Its based off of ubuntu just uses a different window manager which is much lighter weight but also still extremely nice.
Thank you for all you help everyone i went for ubuntu in the end and i am having a great time with it
