Ive been trying to do some research on Amazon and ebay for a new phone (irrelavent, but I'm on a 5 year old flip phone, doing research on my desktop). Ever since about 4 days ago, when I try to open a saved link to an Amazon page, I get an "Unable to connect", on every browser imaginable. However, when I go to vanilla "amazon.com", I get this sign in page, nothing else. So I sign in, but I have to enter my adress (which I didnt need to before) and my SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER (WHY????). So I go on ebay, and the same thing happens...
Does this happen to anyone else? Is there any reason for this? Have Amazon and Ebay's policies changed in the last 2 weeks?
Yeah Amazon has never and should never be asking for your SSN at login or during the checkout process. Seems like some sort of scam. Check for malware. A call to Amazon and eBay customer service would be a good idea
Thank you all for the help. Going to do a system sweep with Avast and CCleaner. Will come back with results. Also have tried it on my mothers chrome book, and shes getting the same thing too.
Ive got some pictures. The first one is the firefox response, just a log in page. The second one is the chrome response, the error looks really suspicious.
Check your DNS settings. Might also be viable to go to CMD and ipconfig /flushdns
This sounds like a DNS redirect error. Could also be a proxy redirection attack as well, where they create a proxy server that drops all normal login areas (i.e. where your screenshot is at) and will only let you logon to their DNS areas that look legit, but are counterfeit.
Could this be your modem being hijacked? someone could have edited the DNS settings on the modem/router(adsl?) also. I assume your using a default password for the modem/router? if yes then well its a pretty good possibility as those passwords are well known.
Just an update: I tried my old router (the stock quest aio router), and amazon pulled up perfectly fine. But with the new router and modem (Asus RT-AC1200, and netgear dm111pspv2 respectively), it does not work.
Try hard resetting the new routers settings (think u need a pin to push the button through a tiny hole somewhere on the back). Also it is possible to flash router with a hacked firmware so you might also want to goto the Netgear website and get the latest firmware just to be sure/safe.
Update, so its fixed. I got the drivers for the modem (netgear dm111pspv2) off their website and manually uploaded them to the modem, instead of using the built in updater in the remote modem config, so thank you
