Just about all of the really top tier quality AMD motherboards start at around the $130~140 price point. If you don't want to pay a bit more then you'll have to go with a high-quality $90~100 970 chipset motherboard instead. I'm running a Phenom 965 clocked to 4.1Ghz on a M5A97 perfectly stable so as long as your board has good VRMs that also have heatsinks you should be good. Also remember that a 970 chipset only supports Crossfire and not SLI (will run single nvidia gpus). Other than that theyre pretty much the same for single GPU setups. Both types of boards are already packed dense with abundant Sata 6gbps, usb3.0 ports coming out of the yin-yang, and UEFI bios.
~$95 solid budget boards for overclocking;
ASUS M5A970 R2.0 http://pcpartpicker.com/mr/newegg/asus-motherboard-m5a97r20
or ASRock 970 Extreme3 http://pcpartpicker.com/mr/newegg/asrock-motherboard-970extreme3
$140~ pricepoint

Gigabyte 990FX UD3 (Dont touch this board if you plan on using Linux; lots of usb problems that only happen with gigabyte boards on linux) http://pcpartpicker.com/mr/newegg/gigabyte-motherboard-ga990fxaud3
Wow! Thanks for the great answer! I couldn't have asked for more!
