I have always used windows and I an unused laptop so would like to start tinkering with linux.
i started out with ubuntu, i still think its the easiest to get into when you come from windows.
There are many threads already on this. Why not read through them?
Thanks!
I'd say Ubuntu or Fedora... Ubuntu would be a little more familiar, but Fedora really isn't too hard to pick up. My impression of the situation is Ubuntu is a bit more user friendly, while Fedora is supposedly more cutting edge.
If you really care, the package managers are different, and Fedora is base off of RHEL... Red Hat Enterprise Linux, which is a stable, business-grade OS. RHEL is nice, but the good version of it costs money. So, back to my first statement: Ubuntu or Fedora.
You could try Zorin, which is developed especially for people wanting to make the transition from windows to linux. It's not bad, but I'd probably still go with Ubuntu 'cause it's quite user friendly and has a large userbase.
You could try them both (and most other distro's) by just booting from disk/flashdrive and running it live without installing...
Definitely Ubuntu to start out with. Really learn how to use it. Learn how to install and remove packages, as well as managing repositories. Use it as your main distro for a while, if possible. Once you feel comfortable with that, and maybe other distributions, try installing ArchLinux. I learn a ton about how Linux works by installing and configuring ArchLinux. I'm sure there are other distros like it, but ArchLinux has a large community and is well supported.
Definitely Ubuntu, because their repository are much more easier to access on a fresh install. On other distros, I often have to manually find repository lists and upgrade.
ubuntu sucks. and only noob ass noobs use it. that's right, i said it!
i recommend sabayon.

Great, another linux distro that I had too my pile of linux distros that I try out for a short while, but ultimately forget about because i'm too settled into my default linux system. I'm way to settled already to make a big switch into another distro.
NOT Ubuntu. Please, save yourself some trouble and go for a real, modern linux distro. Post on the Linux subforum if you want to know why Ubuntu is... I'm trying not to hurt anyone's feelings here... less than optimal as an operating system.
My suggestion would be Manjaro (because someone already mentioned Sabayon).
Try elementary OS, It looks nice and is fairly easy to use

I was not prepared for all the white on this site. My eyes are now stunned.
Anyone saying "Ubuntu" is horribly mistaken. It will lead you down a bad path with Linux. Sure, it's "easy" but its the wrong kind of easy.
it's down right sleazy
something based directly off of debian. or debian itself.
But not Ubuntu, or anything based of Ubuntu. This thing eats resources.

I think it is a great engineering feat of mankind that we are able to input 2 or 3 words and find the extremely specific result that we want.
NO UBUNTU. It it's Linux with training wheels, except it still sucks. Sabayon, Manjaro, OpenSUSE, they are easy to use but still excellent distros.
