What was your first CD/Vinyl/Cassette?

So what was your first purchase of music?

-Band

-Album

-Year bought

For me it was actually 5 at once at the start of 2012 (i know, i'm young haha)

Slayer - Haunting the Chapel EP

Metallica -Ride the Lightening

Metallica - Death Magnetic

The Black Dahlia Murder - Nocturnal (best one imo)

Yngwie Malmsteen - Perpetual Flame

Know let me here yours, also they don't have to be metal.. which technically means that SpongeBob's The Yellow Album was my first but I think we'll just forget about that haha.

Lets see ... Christmas 1971 my parents gave me two records (albums)

and a suit case "hifi" quadraphonic turntable  ...  it was ok for what it was.

  • Jesus Christ Superstar
  • Three Dog Night ... It Ain't Easy

and with in the next two years I bought 40 or 50 more

these are some I remember

  • Uriah Heep ... Magician's Birthday
  • Uriah Heep ... Demons and Wizards
  • Jim Croce ... You Don't Mess Around with Jim
  • Alice Cooper ... School's Out
  • Black Sabbath ... Vol. 4
  • Frank Zappa ... The Grand Wazoo
  • Crazy Horse ... Crazy Horse
  • Cream ... Disraeli Gears
  • The Who ... Who's Next
  • Don McLean ... American Pie
  • Led Zeppelin ... Led Zeppelin
  • Led Zeppelin ... Led Zeppelin II
  • Crosby, Stills & Nash ... Crosby, Stills & Nash
  • Beatles .... White Album
  • Jimi Hendrix ... The Jimi Hendrix Experience
  • The Doors ... The Doors
  • Eagles ... Hotel California

It's really hard to remember when I bought the things ... because I bought so many

Within a decade I had over 500 Albums in my collection.

Within the next decade another 300 maybe

since then maybe 40

many are gone  .. destroyed ... lost ??

It actually rivals my current digital collection.

I keep thinking about selling the ones that are left ...possible ebay name ... Jurassic Vinyl

God I feel old again ... you guys ... knock it off.

Weird Al Yankovic - Dare to Be Stupid 1994.

I have no idea on the first.

When I was a teen I would pirate heavy metal and death metal stuff on cassette from a friend who's parents were into the music. My parents would have taken it off me, so it had porn level security and headphones.

When I got a car I bought Nine Inch Nails, Guns and Roses, ACDC, Pantera and lots of other hard rock / heavy metal. That started in the 90's

my first was given to me by dad when I was 8 years old and I got my first actual stereo in my room that could play CDs, Cassettes, and Radio.

-CCR

-Creedence Clearwater Revival (and something else that was faded off the front)

-no idea when it was bought, but it is an old CD

First Album I ever bought

-Green Day

-American Idiot

-2007

I didn't buy any Vinyl, but my parents had tons and still do with a turntable that works. The one I remember the most is them playing The Temptations, lol.

I had several Cassette Tapes, I think I bought an Offspring Tape as my first though in like 1995 or 96'.

First CD was Fuel - Sunburn in 1998.

First CD I ever bought was actually a new release for my brother's birthday that I decided to keep because I like it so much...

- Coheed and Cambria

- Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume One: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness

-2005

Then began years of pirating and shopping at Newbury Comics and various local record stores

I now have over 100GB of digital music in varying qualities from FLAC to MP3, 160 Vinyl Albums, and hundreds of CDs

First tape that I purchased was Tool - Undertow, around '94...I thought I'd stumbled upon the greatest secret in music history, lol.

First CDs came from a Columbia Music, "get 12 for the price of x" advertisement, and I cannot remember what all I got, but Mom made me send 'em back :(.  The next CD I bought was a used copy of Down's Nola...still love that album.

I grew up with tons of my parents' vinyl...but, the first one I bought for myself was King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King, around '96-'97 which (even though I was "sufficiently warned") totally blew my mind!

Good memories

1977

For me it was actually 5 at once at the start of 2012 (i know, i'm young haha)

And now I suddenly feel very old...

Cassette?  I've got no clue.  I was REALLY young and it was the go go 80's.  You know how it is.

CD was Weird Al In 3D back in 91 when my grandparents got me a Discman for my birthday.  Still got it too (the CD, not the discman), it's in the case sitting 3 feet from me right now lol. Matter of fact, there's a good chance the first cassette I ever bought was by Weird Al too.  Maybe his self titled album or Dare to be stupid?  Don't know.

My first vinyl (other than a few really old 45s my mom got for me at a garage sale) actually came around the same time my first CD did, right around 91.  My dad got me a cassette/turntable stereo a few months before I got the Discman.  If memory serves, it was an old Led Zeppelin IV album.  I was still pretty young though, so it's tough to remember.  Buying an old record was more of a novelty at the time, nowhere near as big a deal to me as getting my first CD.

Cassette: Appetite for destruction.

CD: Pretty hate machine

Vinyl: Eat a peach

First tape (Christmas gift 1984)

First LP (Christmas gift 1987)

First CD (Trifold version purchased myself late '92 or early '93)

And now...

you feel old ... hah!  lol

Band: Smash Mouth

Album: Astro Lounge

Year: 1999

i was twelve.. it was the late 90's... all i knew was what the the local radio station played XD

NIce! I just passed my 100th GB today with an amazing band named Drudkh.

I think mine was hybrid theory from linkin park on CD. Man how times have changed

Fair point.  In 71 my mom was like 9, and I was but a distant glimmer in my dad's prepubescent balls... not to get too poetical about it lol.  Does make me feel a little better knowing I'm not completely surrounded by 16 year olds though.

First cd I bought was Korn - Follow the Leader back in 1998. I also remember buying it. Had to go shopping with my parents and came across this in a local cd store. Had heard it on MTV (The days when they actually where broadcasting music) and was totally into it. On the way back from shopping we stopped at my grandma's house for coffee and while everybody was basking in the sun in the garden (because it was like 30°C) I was rocking it indoors on my granny's stereo :D
