Hi. Trying to put together a build for a friend, they want a socket 2011 build to be used for games and such. Ideally to be on a budget and done for as little money as possible, while remaining future proof for some time through upgrades, need some advice on where to start and what to get hold of. Thanks
Missing details, yo. Take a read. :)

Cool
Budget ~£1000
UK
Built from scratch
Gaming and streaming at 1080P/1440P 60fps
Preferably buying used for the CPU (will buy other components used depending on recommendations)
Good but reasonably priced peripherals.
Storage starting at 1TB HDD with 128GB SSD
Using Windows (Have a copy)
Are you sure you want to go with socket 2011 just for gaming and streaming? Or do you mean 2011-3, which would cost way more than 1000.
In my opinion Socket 2011, budget, and gaming are not words that belong in the same sentence.
Given a budget of £1000 I think your friend would be much better served with a Z97 (socket 1150) an i5 4690k, and a GTX 970. That way they might be able to afford a half decent monitor and other peripherals. This will be a much better balanced system that will play games really well.
Socket 2011 doesn't make much sense for a pure gaming system, unless you need to run multiple graphics cards to power multiple screens or a 4k monitor, and even then an i7 4790k will perform just as well for a lot less money.
Ya that persons request is not going to happen. they have 1000 limit and want a 2011... and want 1440p.... not going to happen.
You should talk to them and explain that the 2011 isn't really a gaming board on a budget.
A 1150 build, like what BGL said is doable on 1k Euro. A 2011, is doable too, but there will be serious compromises to graphics, and won't be what you want. Even less so when you want to get decent peripherals.
Go with a Z97 + 4770, and you should be ok.
It's 1000 GBP. Not euros. We can get 970's over here for about £270-£300. That might make a 2011 build doable.
That build you suggested is £650-700 over here. You're in the wrong currency.
Decent sites: www.scan.co.uk, www.overclockers.co.uk, www.cclonline.com and partpicker for the UK.
Scan can be a tad overpriced and trick you with shipping, beware. CCL I've used. Overclockers has been used by people I know and parpicker's a given.
That's even better, he can get the proper peripherals too now.
Sorry about the currency confusion.
No worries, thanks for the advice, another question, are the 2011 mobo's backwards compatible? As in would a 3960x work in a X89 board? Also he has a 1440p monitor now which he excluded from the budget. Think he might already have owned this one.
Unfortunately the X99 boards are not compaible with older socket 2011 Xeons designed for X79 or earlier boards. I believe this is due to the shift from DDR3 to DDR4 RAM, but there could be a few other reasons.
If he already has a monitor then that will help the budget go further, but I will stress that for a pure gaming machine the expense of going to socket 2011 isn't worth it over socket 1150 as you sacrifice on graphics card power and other components to meet the budget limit.
2011 isn't really a gaming machine primarily, but it can be with the right equipment.
As the guys before me posted, tell us if he needs:
- Monitor
- Case
- Keyboard and mouse
If he doesn't need any of these things and could stretch the budget a bit, he could actually get a new X99 platform (5820K, MSI X99A Plus, Palit GTX970, 16GB Crucial ram, Crucial BX100 250GB ssd, 2TD WD HDD and a Seasonic 750W PSU - Atleast that's what I came up with for 1155 with shipping at Overclockers.co.uk)
The reasons to choose X79/X99 platform :
-more pci-e lanes (40 for top processors - 3960x doesn`t support pcie-e 3.0 officially )
- more ram slots
- more cores
if you need those the go for X platform
I thought 1150 killed 2011
Depends on what you're doing with the PC
Well what can 2011 do that 1150 doesn't beat? Maybe price?
Well if we're talking 2011-3 vs 1150/1151, productivity wise you're going to have a better experience with the enthusiast platform. Also as @ignx mentioned, you can have more ram, more pci-e lanes and more cores. But you have to pay a premium for it.
sure, i own both platforms, x79 ended up as 1080p tv gaming /htpc while x99 being my main platform. Just trying to make sure somebody doesnt`t make a costly mistake like me ( while being a tech enthusiast, I can afford it but somebody can invest their money better then I did.)
I got my intel sockets confused a bit there. Dunno if OP ment 2011 or the newer one though.
You didn't, he mentioned the 3960x (6c/12t) which is on the X79 platform. In multi core tasks it beats the 4790k, but not by a lot. In single core tasks it gets murderd by the 4790k. On the X99, single core operations are still faster on the 4790k than on the 5820k, but that's mostly due to the frequency difference. Though you can OC the 5820k quite a bit if you're lucky and have a good cooler.
