So I got an Intel NUC as a Christmas present with a 4GB 1.35v sodimm, a Broadwell i7 5557u (dual core with HT, 3.1ghz, turbo to 3.4) , wireless AC, Gigabit Ethernet, 1TB HDD, and a couple USB 3.0 ports, and idk what to do with it. I don't need a NAS, nor a HTPC.
Yeah I would agree with @jonnyp3f, either that or some kind of Media PC device. I wouldn't recommend it as a NAS, due to storage limitations, but they are good for something small to stream to, especially since you can mount them to the back of a TV or monitor with a plate.
You're right. Oops. I had three types in and then I reread the original post saying that he didn't have the need for a NAS or HTPC. Originally I had mentioned HTPC, NAS and PMS, and then a Steam Machine.
The current router could be turned into a switch / access point. The DHCP routing would need to be turned off. On some routers the WAN port can be changed to a LAN port, but not always. The built in WiFi on the Nuc could also be used.
But, on the other hand, most people have really quite crap routers. Anything below $60, in my experience -- in other words, what most people buy -- has jokes instead of customization. And not good jokes, really painful puns. Am I jaded? Maybe.
I've ran into too many problems alt tabing in games and dealing with sound levels on multiple things. I have it one system for games running windows and linux runing 2 monitors for everything else.
tape it to the back of a monitor and use it as a server for various things you want to try, and when your main pc is acting up, just use your back up PC
