What Technology Can You Not Live Without?

If a piece of gear died today, would you be in line to buy it tomorrow?

If you answered yes, then what is it?

For me, it’s the IODD ST400 portable HDD Enclosure I got for Christmas. Lets me run whatever OS ISO I need. USB and works on almost everything. Saves me carrying multiple USB drives in my pocket. I paired it with a 1TB SSD and I use it for imaging and OS install / repair. Nice piece of kit.

That looks like a pretty cool device. I can’t really think of anything for myself. If my desktop or cell phone was to bite the dust I would immediately start working on replacement. Whatever that means at the time. Outside of that I don’t have a tech tool that I use everyday.

A freaking smartphone, I do really miss being able to use my old Nokia Flip-Phone.

I just needed ONLY to make calls and have a calendar with notifications there.

Sony Ericcson flip-phone for me. I still have mine. Just need a battery and I’m sure it would fire right up. Thinking about it, its a Ni-Cd battery so it may still be good.

How high-tech does the “Technology” need to be?

Pacemakers?

Refrigerators?

I’ve got the iodd mini and it is great. The storage write lock can be invoked even during bootup on sus systems and paired with that one winpe bootdisk you can do about anything.

I have an USB-C NVMe enclosure running Ventoy that does basically this same thing. Should that device ever become discontinued, you can get largely the same experience using software and commodity parts.

Electricity has been doing it for me in general.

Topic is a bit broad

AC or DC though?

Washing machine.

No way I am doing that sh*t and you can be sure as hell I’ll buy a new one if it breaks.

A lot of things are nice to have. I can still function without a phone, thankfully. I cant literally work without one because I work in healthcare and our clothes can get really truly deep down be dirty, especially in these pandemic times.

Standby generator, hands down. Can’t imagine having to worry about a power outage or big storm

Ereader
Oldschool lowpower b/w lcd preferably. It is so much more convenient than book books.

I thought I read the eel ^ moved out to the jungle and was beating clothes on rocks. /s

“Live without” is a bit much, I’m almost sure if a zombie apocalypse hit, the only technology I wouldn’t be able to live without would be fire, to cook and warm myself with.

As a general thing, my PC and my router. If either breaks, then I’ll be trying to replace them. It probably wouldn’t be an immediate matter for myself though, I’d use my smartphone in a pinch (which is what I do when I have to take my pc’s and network’s power away).

Like others mentioned, I would replace my fridge pretty fast if it broke.

“Live without” is a bit extreme… because that would just be heating, shelter, water and food.

But over all?
Book printing!
When I’m on the go, in need of relaxation, wanting to read up on roleplay stuff… Then books are the way to go for me. Hell, even when the power fails for a couple hours every few years! I’ll grab a book and entertain myself.
I still vastly prefer them over reading off of any screen. And flipping back and forth is so much more convenient than needing to scroll or open bookmarks and the like.

i don’t use it, but maybe it would be “all you need”

@SquirrelMan5k

Love the footage of the phone rolling down the desert hill.

“You may not survive the mob hit, but your phone will.”

I think desktop, but that’s only because it lets me make money! I can take or leave the mobile phone, but I need some way to speak to people…again, income! And family/friends of course otherwise I’d turn into a hermit!

A nice bathroom with a hot bathtub, a comfy toilet and running (hot) water.

I’ve been many times camping in the woods or in boyscout camps, and taking a hot bath and a comfy poop are the quality of life things that I missed the most.
