What SSD to get and should I wait?

I've been thinking about getting an SSD for Christmas for my laptop for OS, software and possibly a game or two. Since the laptop has 2 drive bays, I don't need an overly huge SSD, because it already has a 750gb in it.

My budget isn't set in stone, but I would like it to be within 100$ range, preferably no more than 150$

What I need help deciding is:

  • if it's a good time to buy SSDs or are there new technologies announced for near future that are gonna be better and/or make current ssd's cheaper or any other reason why prices might drop
  • what SSD I should get and what would be the deciding factors in getting one? is it mainly price/capacity ratio or does the performance vary greatly between different models?

I am from Canada and would prefer to use ncix.ca to buy, but I may consider other options if a noticeably better deal is available (gotta factor in the shipping, which varies between stores it seems).

If you can buy things from america I would suggest waiting till whatever christmas or post-christmas sales they have on so that you can get alot more for your money. Apart from getting a better deal at christmas specials I don't see much point in waiting.

At the price point your looking at and what you intend on using it for, i don't think you need to worry about the performance of the drive that much. Look around for some deals(black Friday is around the corner, not sure if that is a thing in Canada though) and try to get something with a low price point. Any SSD is going to be extremely fast compared to your HDD. The tech isn't going to change much other that getting cheaper per GB so no worries there. Just get one from a decent brand and maybe double check reviews to make sure its reliable.

Buying things from America is a lot of hassle and extra expenses for shipping (custom fees and whatnot, I've never done it myself so I could be wrong).

I will probably wait for Christmas sales and now I feel silly for even making this post, because sales will narrow down my options quite a bit...

Thanks, I wasn't sure if performance difference between different models would be even noticeable. I guess for casual use as an OS drive it all boils down to price per GB, right? As long as it's a trusted brand of course.

Sounds to me like you would want just find something on the cheaper end that has good read speeds, and worry less about the write speeds, for example a samsung 840 instead of the more expensive 840 pro.

And reliability.
