What should I upgrade?

I have a budget pc right now but I'd like to upgrade and need help deciding what would be best to do first..

Current setup, G3258, B85 mobo, 750 Ti, 8GB DDR3... The cpu is at stock speeds for now, can't get an overclock above 3.6Ghz, which could be the cpu itself or the cheap mobo. I've tried it all as far as o/c goes, temp never gets high no matter what I do, just crashes at 3.8 and higher.

So I could get a new mobo, and hopefully get a good overclock.. I could get an i5, probably cost twice as much as the mobo, but would definitely help.. I could get a 970, but don't know how much it would help but it would be a nice addition for future upgrades..

This is for gaming performance by the way..

What would you do?

Haswell is still great and will be for a while I assume, but if I'm throwing down for CPU or mobo I might as well upgrade to skylake??

Would a 970 really help me that much with a 3.6Ghz dual core?

Should I just wait til the next gen graphics card and throw down for everything at once?

If you carry over your ram to skylake make sure it's supported. I would shop around for a sale on z87/z97 mobo and a haswell chip. What's your budget to upgrade?

A 970 would help you a good amount of a 750 ti,but you should figure you what your budget is before anything. How much your willing to spend makes all the difference.

One option would be to get something like the i5 4460 and a GTX 970, or R9 390 preferably if you have a strong enough power supply. This route would be quite a bit cheaper than going to Skylake because you could keep your motherboard and RAM.

You'd need a Z series motherboard to OC properly. The dual core is going to affect you on a game by game basis, games like GTAV or Far Cry 4 just don't like dual cores.

What are you doing with your PC? If you're just gaming at 1080p you should be fairly well off

I'd either invest in a 4k display, preferably a 40" 4k display for productivity

an i5 would help with the above games or even an i3.

Otherwise you could just save your money for the summer and do a big upgrade on everything assuming maybe zen/kaby lake come out.

+1 to this

Just throw an i5 in there and upgrade the GPU. Don't bother going to Skylake. It simply doesn't make sense. The performance increase just isn't there over Haswell to make it worth your while.

Yea I suppose I don't really need an overclockable chip with this mobo.. Something like a 4590 that runs 3.3Ghz would help alot, and is cheaper than K series..

What graphics cards can I get on the cheap now that would significantly outperform my 750ti?

Something older perhaps?

Yea I'm just gaming at 1080p and am happy with that. Have to crank the settings all the way down in most games to stay at a decent framerate..

You're best off just upgrading your GPU then, a 380 is a decent upgrade for the $200 range, not sure if you'd really want a used GPU

Wow glad I saw your post. Wow didn't expect a duo core pentium be tied with an AMD 8350 OC'ed at 4.5ghz+ preform the same on like 10+ games. I guess not going quad core and getting 970 is the best thing for you. It just proves AAA titles are super under-optimized for AMD or CPUs with more than 4 cores.

Pretty much, very few games actually make use of 8 threads, something to due with the difficulty involved of getting it working right, DX12 is supposed to fix some of that I think

Keep your mobo and drop a Xeon 1231 V3 in it and get a GTX 970 and call it a day

This would exaly be a very good option!

OP- Here's a video to help out:

I would have said look for a price drop on a 4790k and don't worry about overclocking, but i can see a lot of merit to a Xeon 1231 V3, as its cheaper and you could use it for a NAS/server or a kick ass router later.

I would upgrade the cpu now, not worry about overclocking, and i would wait for pascal/Polaris.

Ok I've been researching and I like this idea, I can get one for $200 from micro center which is nice...

I'm wondering how much overhead I have with my 500w power supply. I've done a few of the online calculators and some say it's plenty and some say i need 600w plus for a few situations...

Components again are

B85M/CSE mobo 1150 socket obviously
2x4GB DDR3
240GB SSD
1TB 7200rpm HDD
2x120mm fans
Standard keyboard and mouse has a couple leds'

That's pretty much it don't run much else off USB or anything like that..

So is 500w enough for the Xeon and a 970? I'd think so but a couple sites disagreed. What about a 380 or something AMD equivalent? They sip a bit more power if I remember right...
