What should I get to play this game?

I am going to be building a pc soon, and this is the only game that I will be playing on it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Train_Simulator. My current system has a core 2 duo processor clocked at 1.86 ghz and has a nvidia 7300gs card. Running the game normally, it gets between 15-20 fps. Using a program to make the game more dependent on the gpu instead of the cpu and to take away the 60fps limit, it is around 7 fps. So, in a budget system (I am only wanting to spend $600 on the system, including os), what card should I get. Something to note, If I get windows 8 as the os (which I want to do) I need a nvidia card. If I get windows 7 I can get any type of card. I am wanting to put more money towards the cpu, as I am going to be doing a little editing, so I don't want to get anything that is way more powerful than I need. So, what are your guy's recommendations?

First, Why do you think you need a Nvidia card with Windows 8?

Second, take it you want to play MSTS2, right?

Third, what are you editing, and with what programs?

1. MSTS has driver issues between amd drivers and uefi mobo's and the game will not boot.
2. Nope, the MSTS from 2001. MSTS2 was dropped, along with the department making it, by Microsoft a few years back (2009 I believe, I may be wrong)
3. Windows Movie Maker to start, and then I  believe I will upgrade to Sony Vegas, unless someone has other recommendations.

What? You must either be trolling of have a major software issue, that game is twelve years old, and could run on hardware that was considered archaic even then. My guess is that you are getting such low FPS due to a compatibility issue.

^I figured as much. I just figured I wouldn't worry about it, because the system needs upgraded anyway. Any ideas? BTW not trolling. Also I am not currently on my computer, as I am visiting family and won't be back until late next monday. If you have ideas to fix it post it here and I will try it then. Also, the audio went out, so that is another reason to upgrade

Just went to check out the system requirements for this game, and I haven't seen anything as low as this is a long time :D

Minumin System Requirements

  • Pentium II 266 Mhz equivalent or higher processor with 4 MB 3D video hardware acceleration or better
  • Windows 95/98/ME/2000
  • 32 MB of RAM for Windows 95, 98, and ME; 64 MB for Windows 2000
  • 500 MB of available hard disk space for minimum install
  • 1.8 GB of available hard disk space for a full install
  • DirectX 7.0a API or later
  • DirectX 7.0a or later compatible 4 MB video card capable of 800X600 resolution in 32K colors
  • DirectX 7.0a or later compatible sound card with speakers or headphones
  • 4x CD-ROM Drive
  • Mouse
  • Super VGA, 16 bit color monitor or better supporting 800 X 600 resolution.

:P I like to live on the dangerous side. At office max I saw a Diamond 6450 on sale. Probably would be bottlenecked by the cpu and I don't think I want a card that was on sale at a chain store :P

If the only game you want to play is msts, I would recommend a downgrade. Get windows 98 and some old parts.

My troll-o-meter sensing some trolling, and a touch of nostalgia.

What part of this do you think is trolling? I am wanting to know what I should look for to play that game and not buy something way overkill. Is it about my game choice? Well, for one, it has a suprisingly large following, and people are still making add-ons to the game. Secondly, it is the first pc game I had played and I had followed along with it as it gave me a dose of my passions of trains (weird, I know). I know it runs fine in windows 7, and it has been proven to not run with cards with amd drivers and uefi mobo's. nVidia cards run fine, however. I am wanting to upgrade my system as I want to keep up technological wise and I want to be able to do other modern tasks (music storage, video editing, exc.) so I want to get something new and decent. This is really the only game I play on pc (I am a console gamer, don't hate) as of right now, so there is no need for a big-powerful card. That may change when the new consoles are released, but for now I have no need for a powerful gpu, so I don't want to get something and be wasting it's capabilities. This is why I came here for help. I have no clue what is today's equivalent to a 7300gs (if there even is one) and want to get something better than that. If you want to see the quality of the game I will be playing, search msts with open rails on youtube. If nothing comes up then watch the demo for msts2. It is kind of similar graphics wise. However I wont't just be using it that way, as Open Rails is a WIP and still has some bugs, so I will go back and forth between that and the original msts. And the nostalgia thing, that wasn't the focal point, but doesn't everyone have a little of it? :P

Maybe something like this.. Has editing power and should run that game :D

Yay, someone who doesn't think I am trolling! Is the 600W psu overkill for this, or do you think I should get it for upgrading in the future?

Also, I kind of also wondered this. One of the people who plays this game on another forum I am on has a 3770k and a titan. What the f*** could he possibly be getting for fps with the 60fps limit off?

Yeah.. I would upgrade that video card in future.. it isnt very powerfull.. You could put better gpu now, but if you play only that game then it dont matter.. Better invest in solid CPU...

With 3770K and Nvidia Titan for that game he would get way to much fps to matter him much.. Between my recomended and his Titan build in that game you two wont see much difrence..
