What should I get R9 390X, R9 390X Crossfire, or R9 Fury X?

Upgrading from a 7970, I want to run a 4K 40" monitor its just confusing because people say the Fury X is better but it has slower memory clock and is only 4Gb instead of 8Gb it is all very confusing to me. I just want one with the best performance for gaming and the one that will be the most future proof. What company's are recommended keep in mind I don't want to buy a red card I can't paint it, will void the warranty I assume.

Fury or Fury X should be your go;

Even so Fury X has lower clock rate at memory, its running at 4k bits bus lane; which makes it much faster (512GB/s)
(overclocked 390x/290x to 1700MHz would only give ~420GB/s) -- 1250MHz stock--

There is no such thing as future proofing in technology.

Fury cards offer HBM memory (much faster than GDDR5 found in 390x, 290x or NV)
4GB is enough for 4k; its the sweet spot - you don't need more memory for 4K.

With Fury X you have a detachable front plate that you can change, color, print your own etc...
Fury X has also waterblock, so its going to be much quieter and cooler than rest cards on the market (including NV)
(Fury is the air cooled edition, little bit weaker)

It's really not very worth it to try and go for 4k gaming right now, it'll be much more doable next year with HBM on the major cards.

That said the Fury(Non X) seems fairly capable at it's price point.

I really like the water cooling of the Fury X so i would get the Fury X over the Fury. I get money from my school that I can only buy things needed for school and have to report everything that I buy but because I go to school for computer sciences I get to upgrade quite often so I don't mind spending the money. Which sounds cool but I have more important things i need to spend the money on like medical expenses but because its not for school I can't.

Also many websites Ive read recommend the R9 390X over the Fury X.

Fury is much faster and more capable over 390x.

Can you explain why only difference I understand is high bandwidth memory and don't understand that.

http://www.amd.com/en-us/innovations/software-technologies/hbm

basically its new type of memory much faster than what is currently used in GPU's.

  • HBM is much faster

GDDR5 is a mature technology, and those are its end days
(those were most likely last series of gpu's with GDDR5 this year)
If you are comparing memory, you cannot look at just the clocks. The most important is memory bandwidth, and this is what you should look at.

GDDR5
390x & 290x on stock clock were running at 320GB/s (heavily overclocked with voltage mod were reaching around 420GB/s)

Now not overclocked stock HBM is already whooping 512GB/s

GDDR5 MAX = 450GB/s (OC as F*CK)
HBM stock = 512GB/s

HBM also runs cooler, and takes less space.

What brand should I go with because they all look the exact same

They are the same so probably xfx or asus unless their customer service has gone to shit in the last couple years. I haven't been keeping up much on that stuff.

the cheapest ~ normal price should be 650$(us) ~ so maybe sapphire.

I do like Asus I've had problems with some other companies.

Changed the title thinking about the 390X in crossfire or the Fury X. Will 1050w be enough for crossfire?

1050w is more than enough for 390 in crossfire, I'd say a good 850 has no issues with it as well.
Though you should really get a single fury x than two 390s

2 390/x's can pull (total system power draw) 800w's a single i7 with a 390x pulls a little over 500w a 850w psu is cutting it a little fine tbh.

Yeah that's why I was asking it was just an idea. Already decided on a Fury X over the 390 but then was thinking about the option of 390X in crossfire would be a better route. I honestly don't know

i'd buy a 980ti tbh it will cost about the same considering you whont need a especially large psu to power your rig and you still get a 6gb frame buffer more than enuff.

I will not buy Nvidia EVER!!!

Lol well thats up to you i cant tell you what to buy but thats what i'd do anless AMD drastically drop's priceing on those 'new' cards and you will be realy lucky if you can even find a Fury X at the moment.

I'm not going to be ready to buy for another 2 months and I can just pay Amazon and they will ship it as soon as it is in stock.
