i have a crappy dlink and im looking to replace it asap with something better, preferably not too expensive as i dont have much money for this. could you awesome people help me decide?
My grandma (yes, my grandma) has a Belkin router she got at target for $30. I assumed it was going to be total crap based on the size and price but it actually kind of surprised me. Its nothing compared to pfsense but it gets the job done, and the wireless is relatively fast too. And its been pretty solid and reliable. From 500 miles away I can confidently say the problem has never been her router, its always MediaCrap and the cable modem.
Belkin N300 I think, although I'd probably go for the N600 if you can. Also grab a 100mbps ethernet switch if you need it
I have a Dlink DIR-655 with all gigabit ports and it works great ... but then I have the real PCs hard wired and just use the wireless for tablets and phones and only paid $5 bucks for it at the Goodwill thrift shop.
I would recommend TP-Link, like the TL-WR4300. It has b/g/n, N support 5 GHz. Stock firmware is ok, but openwrt is recommended of course. The TP-Link Archer C2 is a very cheap ac-router. It's pretty much brand new, so openwrt support was experimental last time I checked.
If you want somerhing cheaper with excellent openwrt support, check out TP-LINKs WR1043nd. We use them at work a lot for embedded stuff. It has a built in gigabit switch and decent wifi. Get the black rev 2 and flash Barrier Breaker on that sucker :-)
One caveat, check that you get latest latest revision. TP-Link updates their hardware quite frequently, the revisions can be found on their site and in my experiece have always been printed on the outside of the box (sticker with serial etc).
Edit: stupid laptop ran lut of juice, edited on my phone.
What are your settings on that because I'm having serious troubles with mine lately, and I bought mine last year for 50 bucks and even had D-Link send me another one because of all the issues. It's why I was reading this thread because something has got to give, I'm hardwired with my PC so that works fine and dandy, but anything wireless anywhere in this house, and it's a slow drag to open up content. I suspect it might be an issue with so many other networks in the area, I mean if we're all configured on the same channel doesn't that cause issues? So I tried another channel, big mistake as it took forever to correct because the router just shut down essentially.
Any idea on decent settings on this thing before I trash it and upgrade to something non-Dlink?
Sadly I think the OP means a consumer router, and while that Ubiquiti one is great, it doesn't have wireless. The cost of that plus an AP would be way out of his price range. Still seems like a great router though! Do you happen to know how one of those stacks up against pfSense? I have pfSense and I'm curious whether my friends could by an Ubiquiti and have our networks link over my OpenVPN.
I have no experience with pf and didn't realize there was a requirement for wireless i kind of just quick plugged what i buy for small businesses thats under $100 and has gigabit to the modem. The OpenVPN works with it
