What RAID controller should I get?

Hi guys,

So once again after a lot of thought I have changed my mind about my NAS build and have decided to merge my Media PC and NAS together and just use Homegroup sharing on Windows to emulate the NAS.

But I'm not sure what RAID card to get..

I want to run 2 RAID setups, 1 of them will be RAID 5 with 4x2TB Barracudas for my games (using a Dedicated RAID card) and the second lot the exact same except with the onboard controller on the mobo.

I have a few issues though:

-Will having more than 2TB of storage on one drive (the theoretical one drive) bring up that issue where windows will only use 2TB and try partition the drive to use it?

-The motherboard i'm thinking of getting is the Asus Z97M-PLUS and it only has a X4 PCIe gen 2 after the top one is filled with a GPU, would that be a problem?

Please point out any mistakes i'm making if you see any :)

I wouldn't use Windows for a server since it is rubbish at 24/7 operation.

Centos would be the best bet. Plex works with it and you can set up a samba share for your windows machines.

Also you can put webmin on it so that it runs headless.

Ext4 and BTRSFS are both way more reliable file systems than NTFS.

OT a low end LSI rocket raid should do the trick you can nab them for 150ish

PCIe x4 is fine you won't saturate it
