What modem is needed to bypass Comcast broadcasting your wifi signal?

I know Logan mentioned in the one video that he found a cable modem to use with Comcast that does not allow them to broadcast his wifi signal.  I'm having this exact problem and top of that the "gateway" modem I'm renting from them has poor wireless performance and the rental fee is just crazy.  I'm not well versed in networking, so what should I get? also, any suggestions for a solid AC router to pair with the modem are welcome and appreciated  :) thanks!

Yeah i was trying to find the same thing ive looked at this modem,"http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-SURFboard-SBG6580-Packaging-570763-006-00/dp/B0040IUI46/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1420499813&sr=8-3&keywords=surfboard+modem but its listed on the comcast website and i remember Logan saying his wasnt actually supported so I wondered which model mainly because he said it was a surfboard which i already know as a good modem

I'd guess any modern cable modem that dosn't have built-in wifi should work for that purpose.

as for the router the NETGEAR AC750 or ASUS RT-N66U are good choices. the linksys WRT1900AC is probably the best you can get if you have the money for it.

currently rocking comcast with the Surfboard 6120 (old but still get 60Mbps (my plan is 50) so it tops off well, router is anockoff of the  asus RT-AC68U (I have a T-mobile supplied version of that with a couple small missing features which i may  put dd-wrt on one of these days.  Good reception through house (router is in  corner of house)

Also you can have them turn off that hotspot feature (I had them disable it on my parents leased modem)

I am running an Arris cm820 modem and A Belkin AC750 router with good results.

Just call Comcast and have them put the modem in bridge mode. Then use whatever router you like.

Recently Comcast added the controls to put the modem in bridge mode to the interface for my Cisco XB3 gateway. Also finally added IPv6 to the firmware. Still would rather ditch the crapcast gear completely but this thing also acts as a SIP endpoint for my phone service so I'm probably stuck with it.

Take the combo. You can flash that router with openwrt or dd wrt. For $90 you are done.

If you want a different modem you can purchase then by all means.

Maybe you didn't mean to reply to me with that. I have other modems but I need the phone gateway that the Comcast modem provides.

I don't know much about VoIP but isn't SIP a pretty standard thing? I can't imagine Comcast is the only company you can get a phone gateway from... If I were you I'd try to either get it put into bridge mode, and run pfSense behind it, or buy your own modem and see if some PC or something can run the VoIP endpoint. Maybe pfSense could do it?
