Hey, I was just getting some more information from this forum. I just passed on the i7 4770k and was wondering if I will be missing out on anything. Also just out of curiosity, what is hyper-threading and why would someone need that kind of processor? Just wondering, bought the i5 4670k instead. I know hyper threading is virtual cores and not physical. Thats about it.
Hyper-threading (also known as SMT) is letting two threads run simultaneously on a single core.
This is mainly done by a smaller hack in the fetch, letting it fetch 2 threads.
SMT is used to increase throughput, because modern architecture have such an wide execution pipeline, that it is hard to utilize every resource.
Non of the threads are giving priority over the other, they are having a dynamic relationship with the resources.
SMT can give performance improvement to about 60% (until it is been limited by bandwidth).
Basicly rather than stuffing your mouth with one hand your stuffing your mouth with two.
But only if your name is Linus.
And chewing with both sides of the mouth.
LMAO. Best explenation ever.
Also the new hyperthreading actually makes you eat more faster compared to the puny Pentium 4 HT.
But in terms of gaming, not much gain except that you can run multiple programs at the same time and not have slowing issues. You can even run more programs at the same time while running a virtual OS with the same programs opened again(if you have the memory to spare).
