What is a safe Bitcoin exchange to use?

Since mining Bitcoins is out of question, i am looking to buy some coins through exchange service. But i don't know which one is trustworthy. Coinbase is probably not a good bet. I will be paying with british pounds (GBP). Also i want to keep my coins in offline wallet.

Any recommendation?

EDIT: I found Xapo.com but don't have any experience with it.
EDIT 2: CoinCorner is another exchange site but boy they want to know everything about me.

I like that it's based in UK. Don't have to pay for currency conversion. But can you donwload the bitcoins to offline wallet? I don't want them to run away with my money like Mount.Gox did.

Virwox is an exchange website that doesn't require all that information although the fees are high.
