Iv been using avg for years now, however getting sick of how much of a hog it is. Any advice for a good free Antivirus these days?
I like malwarebytes. It's not as intrusive as some of the others.
I normally reccomend bit defender, the free version works just fine, but you do need to sign in with an email.
Other than that, I personally don't even use an AV, other than malwarebytes for occasional scans.
Common sense is your best friend.

Avast isn't bad just put the thing into gaming mode or it will yell at you.
Yeah malwarebytes is great but it finds many things on my pc as a virus when they are sorta sketchy... which is a good thing, just annoying when im dealing with not well known publishers.
My other computer has linux. However this is for the big gaming tower. The major problem is my wife uses this computer too... However thank you for the advice. I'll probably check them out. The funny thing is one of my gaming friends swears by windows defender.
I use a combo of microsoft security essentials, malwarebytes antimalware, and malwarebytes anti exploit. I find that both mse and malwarebytes work great together. I always use what the bleeping computer forums are using. It makes ware removals easier especially if they are brand new. Check out bleepingcomputer.com
I also use deep freeze which is great because you never even need to install anti virus software at all. Its a really good program for public shared pcs.
I like Zonealarm. No false positives, maybe a bit underreporting. But I hate Aviras annoying beeps and boops.
I hope your wife uses a normal user account and is not running full admin rights. And maybe look into a way to use USB drives in read only mode although I do not think it works without third party software.
Other than that I would run noscript and a good Adblocker on the browser (not Adblock Plus they have a whitelist they do not really care to curate and it has happened that domains have been reregistered and been used to infect computer visiting the sites).
Have Malwarebytes installed just so you can run it when you need to. MSE seems good enough. Common Sense 2016 is a must have :)
Its too bad they dont sell common sense 2016. id open a store and become a billionaire ;)
Bitdefender can be a bitch. I had the pro version free for a while until I was playing Payday 2 and tried to install Hoxhud. It was convinced that one of the files was a virus and would not let me run it anyways, no matter what I did to tell Bitdefender to overlook it.
I would honestly recommend only Malwarebytes and common sense to OP. You really don't need an antivirus that bad unless you're not using the internet for the same shit every day. I personally only use about a dozen sites on a daily basis and never go anywhere potentially fishy and I haven't gotten a virus in a long time.
You could a kickstarter for funding facepalm haha
