What graphics card for WQHD

What graphics card would you reccomend for this resulution (WQHD)? I personally think the new 980ti is pretty perfect but at the moment it is a bit past my budget. If I was to buy something like the acer XB270hu I would probably save up for the 980ti because of it 144hz, g-sync e.c.t. But would a 980 be enough for a normal WQHD monitor running games normal tasks multitasking e.c.t. Do you think I should save up for a 980ti if I was to go WQHD or would a normal 980 suffice? I have two 970s running a 1440p monitor. Pretty good. Runs as good or better then a 980ti depending on the game. There is the ram issue but I haven't ran into it yet. Dx12 games should help that. But a 980ti would do great too

Maybe consider an R9 Fury or GTX 980.

1440p you are gonna wanna be looking at an R9 290X/390X or Fury. The 980 is also a good choice although I'd go Fury over 980. Especially if you wanna eventually go to 4K.
