What fibre cables do virgin media use?

Inspired by this video here on "How to Turn an Old PC into an Epic Router", I have decided that I would like to build my own router from an old AMD box.

I have access to all the parts (2nd PCI ethernet port, network switch ect) but I then came across a snag. I get my fibre from Virgin media, I get it down this cable shown below, this is not an RJ45 cable, I cannot plug this into my "Epic Router"

Do I need some sort of PCI card, adapter or modem to complete the circuit? Also can anyone identify this cable?

You would need a cable model PCI-e card, but I don't know if they actually exist. You'd also need to know the exact physical and data-link layer configuration, i.e. which encapsulation to use, and power settings etc; you may also run into issues regarding the interface's MAC address (but don't quote me on that). Layer 3 configuration is straight forward since you just need to get an IP address using DHCP.

Have you considered putting the Super Hub into modem mode?

Unfortunately, I'm not particularly good with identifying particular cables (other than it's a coaxial cable); apparently it's a PF100 coaxial cable.

I also use virgin media and have the same "Super Hub". What you can do is go into the settings on the "Super Hub". Assuming you haven't changed any land settings it's on 192.168.0.1 i think. with the default username of admin and a blank password.

What you do now is click on "Super Hub Settings". and there is a setting called "Modem Mode" enable this. What this will do is just turn your "Super Hub" into a modem, Disabling the switch ports on the back (except the one closest to the coaxial connection) and disable the wireless. Then you can do what you specified in your post.

To access the "Super Hub" now just type 192.168.100.1 into your browser.

Hope this helps

++This, Then just set whatever router you plan to use to get the address by DHCP
