What do you think of this "theory" about 1440p monitors?

Resolution is different from definition or image quality, The 1440p as recommended by someone , may not actually have better quality / definition than a 1080p one , may simply have a larger screen with a higher number of pixels to render.

You just have a better definition 1440p monitor when the number of pixels per cm2 is higher than on a 1080p display, or if the pixel size is smaller. To give you an idea, an 1080p 21.5" monitor is roughly the same size in pixels of a 27" 1440p monitor.   If the pixel size is identical , you have approx. the same number of pixels per cm2, therefore, the image resolution that both present is similar, except if the larger monitor has features that allow for a higher quality image, of course , but that has nothing to do with the resolution .
Therefore , saying that it is better to play with medium details at 1440p than everything maxed out at 1080p,  overcomes the barrier of reasonable. I believe you have never done the test , otherwise you would say no such thing ...

A good  27" 1440p monitor does have better definition than a 1080p 24 " , but this difference is similar to the difference between a ~ 22 " vs 24 " monitor . If they are both equal , have the same characteristics , the smaller monitor is slightly better because pixels are smaller, therefore, larger number of pixels per cm2 . Like 27" has an equivalent definition of the 22" one , the 30" is similar to a 2560x1600p 24 ~ 25" 1080p .
If running 2560x1440 pixels on a 24" monitor, that would result in a much more defined image, but still a game at medium would always look worse than other in Very- high at 1080p ... I dont have the least doubt .

Now , with less than 300 € purchase yourself a 120 or 144Hz monitor, these yes, apparently they are ideal for games and there are considerable differences in the fluidity of play, which is what the picky gamer want . For 200~250 € you already buy great 23" 24" monitors with IPS panel, and I believe this are the best ones for being one meter away from the nose.  Not only will you save a lot of money but also you will have the best graphic performance for longer ... This resolution is very heavy even for a GTX 780ti .
Make no mistake , even the GTX 780ti is not able to present a satisfactory rate of frames in the most demanding today's games on a 1440p monitor ...  and that already lets guess what is coming for the next 2 or 3 years! (even worse)

As for the nose, this is it: most of us spend most of the time within 1 meter away from the monitor, and for this distance, a 24 or 25" monitor is ideal.

Ultra HD monitors ... not worth talking about them as there is no hardware for them.  "

by: "Maxw3ll" at some forum

edit to possibly save my ass: tl;dr, but it sounded stupid

I received this huge testament on a forum just because I recommended a 27" 1440p monitor to a guy that will run 780ti SLI.

If there's any fault, I think it ignores the fact that having a larger monitor can be nice, and a 1080p resolution would make the pixel density too low. Also, there's more screen real estate on 1440p as opposed to 1080p, which is relevant for those who need it. Maybe not a huge difference, but it's there.

Yes, pixel density plays a part.

On your desk, a 1440p monitor will always look better than a 1080p one.

You can pick up great 1440p monitors for around $300.

Also

Ultra HD monitors ... not worth talking about them as there is no hardware for them.

I call bullshit on that.

This isn't a theory. It's what everyone already knows about density.

What are you talking about? My 780 achieves 60 FPS in 90% of games at 1440p, with the highest textures and highest post processing. It sounds like you've never used a 1440p monitor.

Dual 780ti cards can push three 1440p monitors in a surround configuration fairly well. They can perform at 4K resolution, above 1440p.

yep my 780 is lovely at 1440p. I also think it looks much better than my old 22'' 1080p monitor.

in the end who cares do what you want. woo!

I know what's cheaper. When I emptied my bank account for some of my components, it did not feel good!

opening the boxes when they came felt oh so gooood though
