This is my first build. I chose these components, but they are slightly over budget. Do you have any ideas on how to make it cheaper or any improvements? I'll be using this for gaming and some photo/video editing. Also please note that I live in Canada.

go with AMD instead of Intel, they're alot cheaper if you want it in budget.
I would also checkout tigerdirect.ca if I were you they have great prices
If I go with AMD, what CPU and motherboard do you suggest? Also, the prices were selected ca.pcpartpicker.com which always selects the lowest price, but ofcouse I will check prices on shopbot.ca too.
You have a total budget? I'll cook up something nice.
That intel build looks fine to me. if you want to go with amd then i would recommend FX8350with one of the following mobo´
- Asus Saberooth 990Fx r2.0 or(Gen 3)
- Asrock 990FX Extreme 9
- Asus M5A99fx pro R2.0
Thease boards are realy sollid, the Asrock is cheaper priced then the Sabertooth. 10 bucks, but its Asrocks top of the line mobo. But the sabertooth is a very decend and great mobo.
My total budget is around CAD$1 000 - $1 100 (including tax, monitor and keyboard).
I find it a realy tought decision between AMD and Intel. The 3570k is ussualy faster in current games, but games in the future might become more multi-threaded, so I really don't know what to do. Since I plan to build this in September, I'll wait and see what happens with the FX-9000 series CPUs.
4670k is just fine and you can always cool it off better later on and overclock if need be (might also check docs about IHS removal and thermal paste replacement on the chip if you want to OC). If you're more into editing then go for the best monitor, processor (go with i7), memory (don't buy 1x8 now and later on another one, they might go off production, either buy 2x4 and another 2x4 of the same series, so it runs in dual channel of the lowest speed (I did this with ddr2 worked just fine), or go with 2x8 now if you need it), and don't forget more storage. If you want a better gaming PC then you can go with AMD although I'm not sure how that will hold in the future, and get a more beefier video card that will last, i.e. a 670/770 bought with the money saved on CPU, motherboard and maybe cut a little on cheaper memory and Windows OS
