What do you think about this game idea?

Hi all.

I have started work on a small project. This will be my first game I'll try to get on the market. So the basic idea is:

You are a leader of a tribe, that live at the end of the world. You have to gather an army from your tribe and go on hunting missions and conquer unknown lands and camps. It will be an ancient stoneage setting, with graphics, similar to cave drawings. Basically you will command the tribe leader, and the army will follow his actions. You jump - your army jumps. You move back - your army moves back.

There will be different types of  soldiers. However, the player can swap battle styles on the fly - change from archer to warrior mid battle. Whatever style the leader is, the respective squad of soldiers will get a  slight boost. Archers will shoot a bit faster, clerics will heal a bit more, etc...

Also you will have to build your village to accommodate more people, meaning larger army. And if you manage to keep them well fed and happy, they will have additional boost in battle.

I am also thinking of adding a few gods, to which you will have to give gifts and pray to, in order to get different blessings.

Basically that's it. There will be boss battles with huge monsters, duels 1vs1 etc...

My main question is, is it too much like Patapon? The battles will move from left to right, there will just not be the rhythm part of the game play.

My second question is: would this kind of game be interesting to anyone, or should I try the top down shooter I had in mind first?

At first it sounded like an RTS mixed with SimCity, until I read that you wanted to make it a side scroller.

I played Patapon and this doesn't seem anything like it. Will this be a phone game or on the PC?

PC... To export the game for iOS or Android I'll need to pay some license fees and stuff. And I have heard, that putting your game on the app store is kind of a pain. And honestly, this will be my first attempt in serious game making. So I'd like to stay in familiar territory - PC.

It's not really gonna be a side scroller. The screen will move if you move, and you will be able to move back as well.

Most of this is just a concept atm... I am just nervous. Don't want to put some shit out, that nobody would like to play, cause the concept sucks.

Thanks for your answer. If you have any ideas or something - I am open to them...

PS:Whenever I have something playable, I'll post a link to it here. Hope that's not against the rules or something...

I'm imagining Civilization meets Overlord...kinda? Am I even close? Do you have any concept art? I'm a sucker for a pretty face.

At the moment my PC is back at the retailer for hard drive issues. That gives me time to work on the concept of the game. I will have some art as soon as I got my PC fixed or replaced with a new one.

Have you ever played Patapon? It's basically gonna be like that. Your army on the left side, the enemy on the right side. You control only the leader of the army. Whatever you do, your army do the same. You are not controlling your army. They are just doing whatever you do - attack, defend, jump, duck or whatever. The idea is, that you don't directly control your army, but you can make your troops fight better if you keep them well fed and happy.

The art I picture in my headis literally like cave drawings - stylized human figures with stylized weaponry, fighting other stylized human figures, monsters, animals, etc., patapon style on a screen, looking like a rock.

The sound I hear in my head is percussions and stuff.

The town management is more like low pressure gameplay between battles, then something else. Ofcourse, you need to build homes and stuff to grow the population and get larger army, as well as getting happiness and some god monuments and stuff... But far less complex than Civ games.

This project is way to big for a first game. Here is some advice: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UvCri1tqIxQ
