Moved my PC into a new room of my house, and now whenever i leave it on for more than an hour a rancid burning smell emits from the chassis.... obviously somethings wrong
what do i does??
Unplug that shit. now. I would check the PSU to verify there's no damage, also look on the motherboard at things like capacitors (bulges, cracks, leaks are signs of failure). Also, is it on a surge protector? is the surge protector newish?
Also, check the voltage of the outlet. there are other things to check too but I'm no electrical engineer...
not new, same equipment, just placed in another room of my parents house...
hmmm
just to mention, i had to wire the outlet to a three prong outlet because the wiring is the original wiring from 1890.... AC no ground
i beleive i did that when replacing the outlet... came up a tad short on 115.6v
stick your nose into the case and verify the source of the smell. if it is that bad and pc still running. odds are its from the psu
it did not smell like this b4... only when i moved it to the new room
indeed it is
Since you moved the PC, and the smell started after that, the cables inside may have moved around and are touching something hot and causing that smell.
i was argueing with my father when replacing the outlet that the wiring in the house was so old the insulations on the copper wiring was cracking off...
note to self about my life rn
this house is fucked i gotta move out soon my parents arent very competent or intelligent with the feild im studying telling me what to do and how i feel.
Open the case and see if there are any leaking capacitors (unlikely) or anything odd on the motherboard.
As someone said, if the PC was still working after you noticed the smell, it's probably the PSU.
If you're not uncomfortable opening up the PSU to check for molten plastic or touching wires, do so. The capacitors in the PSU are usually of the larger breed so I would wear rubber gloves when dismounting and disassembling it. It takes 5 minutes and has a high chance of confirming the source of smell. Needless to say, don't use the PC until you find the source of the smell, not even in the old room where the outlet was fine, because the potentially faulty outlet might have started a permanently damaging process in the PSU (or something else, be it the cables or motherboard). And yeah, check all the cables and connections for scorch marks.
That can mess with modern power supplies.. the ground rail is very important because otherwise all your doing is connecting directly and floating your power supply on the power grid lol
Double check the house wiring again, maybe you didn't tighten one of the screws enough and it's arcing. And did you try to provide a ground? A wire from the ground prong to a water pipe is better than nothing. Is the psu polarity sensitive?
