I've been contacted by a noob with a old xp pc. He want a new OS. I've told him stuff, and we agreed that installing a linux distro would be the best possible update. My question to your guys is; what distro would you recommend? (it's an old pc, idk 5 years perhaps)
Xubuntu of course.
ty, downloading :)
There's lots to choose from. Take a look a DistroWatch and pick one you like. Personally, I recommend Linux Mint Cinnamon. Easy to live with distro.

I would recommend Ubuntu, the desktop version. I find it really easy to use. Great GUI, so if your friend doesn't know how to work in the shell, he might not need to.
Mint or Ubuntu with a light evirorment. If it is a old PC it might not be able to handle heavier ones like Gnome, Unity or cinnamon Environments.
So Mint Mate or Xubuntu are good choices i think.
Give Netrunner a try. Underneath it's Ubuntu, get the Main edition. It has a lot of stuff in it out of the box that you would install anyway (I already feel getting sideways looks by the other Linux users that install the software on their own). That said: you will probably changing your distro in the next year two to three times, which is okay.
Although it is entirely possible to use the long term support version of a distro and not worry about upgrading it until 2020.
which one do you use, core or educational?
+1. Zorin OS Core or Lite (depending on system specifications)
Thanks for all the suggestions guys :) Imma give xubuntu a try for now. :)
I'd have to say linux mint. It's most like XP from the start.
Man i Just logged in to say that get zorin light since it uses very little ram and you get to choose the interface you like very easily
Mint with cinnamon. That's what I use whenever I get really pissed at using windows. Then end up going back to windows cause I need my games.
EDIT: took a look at zorin, as others recomended, and I change my answer to Zorin. But i do enjoy mint+cinnamon for the aesthetics
Linux Lite, it's basically Ubuntu with XFCE and nice theming. Personally I find it nicer looking than Xubuntu, and the default appearance is quite XP like.
If you do not like XFCE for some reason you can try Lubuntu which has LXDE, also enough XP like.
Linux Lite, It's lite weight, easy to use and it looks nice.
I guess we all have our favourites, Ubuntu Mate would get my vote. Ubuntu base with lite UI
I would recommend showing them a few different gui's and seeing which one they like the most, then see which distro supports the chosen gui.
GUI wise it just needs to be as XP like as possible. It's for a 50+ year old drunkard, whom just want it to work without any hassle, and he would like it to be as he is used to having it. If stuff breaks, I'm the one whom will have to fix it again, I prefer the CLI, but I don't know the ins and outs of it, so the distro can't be too exotic so to speak.
idk the specs, but it's probably something like a Celeron 1.8-2.4 GHZ single core with iGPU and 2GB RAM. in other words, old junk really.
Also, thanks a lot for all the replies guys, much appreciated. :) I'll give zorin a chance and see what all the fuzz is about :P
