What antivirus?

Logan, Wendell & forum lurkers,

I'm currently in the market for a new antivirus, just wanted to know if you guys had any recommendations.

I prefer it to have as little footprint as possible, I just want it to do its thing and never hassle me, especially while I am in-game. I had Kaspersky a while back, but it's constant popups drove me insane. I have had good experience with AVG, but am unsure what level of protection it offers.

Thoughts / Advice?

Cheers in advance!

if you were wanting a free, lightweight anti virus program, i would recommend AVG free. this software is free, as you have just guessed by its name and the scanning of files is quite fast for a free program compared to something like Microsoft security essentials.

Thanks for the advice, might go back to using AVG again then. I just assumed that free = less protection.

Obligatory post in every antivirus thread

This doesn't help. I like to live on the edge.

Myself im using Windows Defender since it came preinstalled on my computer and well, its free but im also using malwarebytes pro or whatever it's called and well it does the job its supposed to do as far as i know.

Ps. I love living on the edge, midgetporn torrents 4 lyfe

Older system - AVG free

Newer system - Avast free

Wouldn't "living on the edge" be using windows with all protection, UAC and system restore disabled?

Saw that coming from about 18 inches away.

I use a combination of Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes. Works just fine for me.

MSE is very low profile, the castle icon in the system tray simply changes color when it wants you to update or if it has been a while since you last scanned. I think the only time it pops up is if it detected a virus.

The free version of malware bytes doesn't even run by itself, so no pop-ups there.

Like a few others I'm doing MSE and malwayrebytes. If you're willing to pay the lowest footprint premium AV I have experience with is Vipre Antivirus Premium. It's got frequent updates and it's very light on resources even when scanning. Also it has a good firewall if you're patient enough for the first few days to put it in learning mode.
