What is Wendell doing on his computer when Logan is talking during TEKs and INBOX.EXEs? I mean, he's got 5/6 monitors. Surely he can't be using them all during the show. I understand the monitor setup when not doing the show but during the show, I can't see him actively using more than three.
-One for Logan's face and chat.
-Two for articles/notes.
Are Wendell's other monitors 'just on' doing nothing, like Logan's wallpaper monitors? Not criticising the wallpaper monitor. Just saying there aren't any active windows open in it. Therefore 'doing nothing'. So I guess my question is - are there any windows open in the other monitors or does Wendell merely use the monitors to obfuscate his countenance?
Well they didn't just buy all these screens for Tek Syndicate haha.
I'm sure Wendell (and Logan) use the other monitors a lot more when doing work, because Inbox.exe etc isn't really work, well not multiple monitor work at least.
Also, that wallpaper monitor that Logan has may have just been a review sample that he doesn't need and that is just lying around, so it makes for a nice to the side thing for the shows.
It's called multi-tasking. Work goes on, even when you're making content for the community. Work never stops, and it's perfectly possible to do multiple things at the same time, for instance, talk to someone on the phone or videoconference, and review documents or do research or do correspondence or accounting at the same time. Different activities can use different parts of your brain, and there is nothing in your brain that prevents you from using all parts at the same time lol, except you have to eat enough sugar and drink enough water, because that's like N2O for the brain.
do you really think that it is a good idea to do multitasking like this? I mean, I can imagine to drive a car and talk at the same time, but really doing multiple stuff that needs your actual awareness would drive me insane after some time. (and might be even less efficient than doing everything seperated from each other)
I think a lot about stuff like this. I really like the idea but I have the strong tendency to increase the speed of thoughts and motions up to a level which drains more energy from my “battery” that can get restored in my rest-times
I dont see the problem. I have 5 screens (Used to be six) being used all the time.
Screen 1, ether an article or game or something. My main focus.
Screen 2, almost always a chat.
Screen 3, ether a movie/show or if im concentrating on something, music, hardware performance stats along with mumble or another voice chat.
Screen 4, Usually facebook for my mates who cant be bothered using something better.
Screen 5, Other articles and websites that ill glance at. An extra screen for when I need that extra screen.
Also always have my phone available for more chats, calls and social media.
Its not that hard to multitask. I struggle when i sit down at computers with just one screen. Tinking about getting a USB monitor specifically for Uni.
In the processing, and mining industries, it is commonplace for the person to multi-task a series of monitors to control the mine or port operation. With autonomous-mining the ability to 'multi-task' will be a given.
We're having this debate in Australia, on the effects mine-site automation (remote-control haul-trucks, and drilling-rigs etc), and how best to integrate the workforce into this new concept. Unfortunately, there will be many people displaced by these new technologies, because they are either computer illiterate, or do not wish to learn.
It's going to have a massive impact on those concerned. Possessing intermediate computer skills, and the ability to 'multi-task' will be essential prerequisites for any one entering the mining industry in the near future (which is now)
That may be. Though, I don't hear any clicks on the keyboard and mouse. Maybe the clicks are removed during editing. But I get the feeling that during the show, Wendell doesn't do any other work.
On the other hand, Wendell has misspoken a couple times on the show before. Maybe it was all the multitasking. Or not.
Mostly its info streams. Usually the way i work is the bottom row is work and top row is stuff to keep an eye on or distracting stuff. Its far enough away it doesn't distract me if I need to concentrate. Makes switching gears faster if I'm dealing with inefficient tasks like server cat herding that has a random wait between things I can do as I go through a given procedure.
During the Tek there is the list of topics on the left of center. Articles in many tabs on the right of center. References and notes on the far right. Logs and stream metadata on the far left. Logan top right and me top left.
I love working in rows like this. Its freeing because the periphery monitors just queue up things when I am busy but I can feel like nothing is being neglected. Sometimes these monitors show work being done or info gathered by others at my general direction.
Yes, multitasking does have adverse effects. There was an article in Maclean's Canada, a few months back, talking about it. I can't remember what the effects were (and I no longer have the magazine), but I do remember it wasn't anything serious like developing a tumour. I think what it was saying though, is it makes it more difficult to concentrate and actually will slightly shrink your brain. I do remember the article mentioning doing things like yoga (focusing on one thing at a time)will infact increase your brain size
I feel a small part of it is that Wendell is trying to tread lightly in Teksyndicate involvement as he has a professional persona to maintain with his own business.
But that being said it is their channel and we enjoy what they produce. Let them produce their videos in a manner that makes them the most comfortable! I'm okay with this.
He's said that's what he's comfortable with and we should respect this...just respect the dudes privacy :)
