the information on this stuff seems to be sparse and conflicting, with some things apparently working in one version of whatever hypervisor youre using and breaking on the next release. it would be nice to have a thorough guide to either QEMU+KVM or Xen specifically covering things such as sharing and passing through physical hardware, especially graphics cards.
I'll second that motion, even though I do have it working on Fedora 22, but there is a lot of interest in the topic and many more people who would try and be successful in getting PCI pass through to work if there was more consolidated guidance in what hardware works and what doesn't, like the Asus Sabertooth board you guys just reviewed, it would be great to know if Asus now has the proper IVRS tables included in the BIOS signature to make the board functional for pass through.
I know choosing the correct mother board is a difficult task with so much conflicting information, and I got lucky with my second choice in choosing a motherboard, but I'm sold on Linux and it would have been a deal breaker if I couldn't get it to work, I'm sure many more folks would jump on the Linux bandwagon if they knew what was possible running Windows in a KVM with hardware pass through.
i think in terms of finding out what hardware works and doesnt, what would be useful is a thread dedicated to posting working configurations so they can be added to the relevant official wikis
I'd very much like to see a video on this! Would be a great asset to the TekEnterprise channel!
I've been thinking about doing something like this the next time I upgrade my workstation, but I haven't read up enough to feel comfortable doing it yet.
I support that idea!
Dito, TekEnterprise material, would be awesome to get anything on Xen.
I'm terribly interested in seeing a wendell/Tek Enterprise video on virtualization. I've seen videos on and read a lot of information on VMware, Xen, Oracle, red hat, citrix, prox mox etc. I get such a headache getting past the "buzz words" they like slamming in to any educational material I can find on these platforms. I just want someone more intelligent to sift through the information and explain some pros and cons of the different platforms and how they actually work. Also, Nutanix seems to be the hot item on the market as far as scalable storage, virtualization and computing power for enterprises but I'm still pretty skeptical.
hope to hear some thing back from the team. T
Thanks!
I'd have to +1 this one as well. Very interested to see Wendell's review of this. A more extensive review than a 5min video would be great.
+1
This would be great! I've been playing with KVM and GPU passthrough for some time and it is a very cool project that continues to develop.
I support this, it'd be very helpful and interesting.
This would be awesome! There is a ton of resources out there to read about and lots of videos that show it working. I would like to see Wendell's perspective on this, also.
+1 for the KVM/PCI passthrough video. I have been trying to pull it off for a long time with no success.
Would love to see this; I'm considering making my new computer specifically for this if it's functional. I'd love a video that tests it out with a mid to high end system in mind if possible.
