Well Avast Just Screwed Me Over. Anyone Got Any Better Alternatives?

Booted my computer this morning with no desktop or taskbar. I found out that the shield removed the dll file without notifying me or even giving any explanation to why.  I decided to reinstall startisback and Avast's shield blocked the installer. As ive installed it before, I know it is trusted. i try and add an exception and they dont allow me every time i try restoring the executable.

So I thought I should go here for security software reccommendations.

So what security software should i move to? Thanks

F-Secure has been rated one of the best home anti-virus applications. I've used some of there software in the past but I'm not totally sure what it's like now. In the past I've used Avira which was great, however overtime there virus definition updates became a bit slack which led me to using Avast.

Avast is becoming a bit of a pain, they keep adding more and more features that I think are pointless. E.G. Application updater, I really hate this because it updates applications without telling me, I don't need it because I can do it myself or download a program I trust and they should just stick to doing a anti-virus based package.

Wouldn't recommend AVG because there virus definitions aren't usually up-to-date and please what ever you do, do not use Norton's Anti-virus! It is the worst thing I have ever had to deal with...not to mention that it's probably more responsible for giving malicious viruses more freedom then it actually prevents.

Comodo anti-virus is reliable and I believe there is a free download. The last solution I would recommend is Zone alarm. I've used Zone alarms firewall for years because it's great, but in the last few years they're developed an anti-virus section as well. You used to have to pay for the anti-virus but they've now made it free (Also It's really good at asking you whether a process can have access to certain files or connect to the internet or a network).

Experiment a bit and see what you like, but I would recommend Zone alarm!

I havent seen F-Secure before so i'll take a look at that.

Dont worry I will NEVER use Norton. When i setup someone's new pc i almost alwyssee nnorton Installed and I instantly remove it.

Comodo sounds good and Ill take a look at Zone Alarm too. Thanks Coro Vintage

Zone alarm has gotten bad reviews for along time now. Its become bloated and heavy on resources.( ive used it so i know)

If your wanting something free that you can trust, i recomend, Comodo internet security premium (its free)  And its what i use. Great detection rates. Great firewall. And has alot of other features. And is extremely light on resources.

Make sure to go through the setting, Turn HIPS on. Stealth ports. Sandbox.

Been awhile since i installed it, cant remember all the setting i enabled.

a combination of MSE and not doing stupid shit on the internet

don't stick your internet dick into places you shouldn't be and you won't catch STDs or catch it on fire

don't let your friends mess with your computer and you won't viruses from animal eroctica

pretty simple stuff, 99% of viruses and malware comes from porn, others from scams which are obvious, nobody on the internet will ever give you anything, ever, or torrents which you can just read comments for that

There are no good anti-virus software. Not a single one. Learn to protect your PC without them or you will never be secure.

F-Secure has been rated one of the best home anti-virus applications

I highly doubt that after I unpacked a zip with skype virus on my desktop and F-Secure said nothing about it. It also gave me a lot of false positives on websites that I know are secure.

MSE and not doing stupid shit on the internet

Is the same as just

not doing stupid shit on the internet

Haha. Love that pic.

most likely

Well, first off. Did you land any viruses that caused avast to delete the DLL's?

There were no causes for a virus at all. I used the forum and did some offline gaming yesterday. It must've been from a definition update. Havent liked avast for some time now.

Im now in Comodo and did a full scan. A few files ive had to add to trusted but atleast Commodo makes it easy to actually do this.

Liking the picture (I have this installed by the way haha)

MSE?? Just no.

Think this should be OK for now hopefully shouldnt have such a system load that ive had with previous software. Thanks guys

i use avira anti vir myself, also AVG is allways a good scanner.  for malware i use, malwarebytes anti malware.

Ya if you have a viruse use malwarebytes. For root kits use tdsskiller. If you pay for malwarebytes you can get active protection. Also even if you dont think you have a virus still scan your pc with malware bytes and tdsskiller. You will be surprised I guarantee it

Personally i have never had problems with Avast, although i am moving away from it and relying more so on browser defense and firewall setup, i used to rely on AVG, and in the early days Norton, id say just rely on Avira and Malwarebytes its best out atm imo, use firefox for your browser also :)

Sorry but Avast doesnt just randomly remove dlls with no log file , or notice. BS

MSE + Common Sense. I know MSE has started to suck recently but i just have it on my computer anyways. But as one of the other users said, you can't beat common sense.
