Weird issue with network speeds

Hi,

I am having a weird issue with copying files between 2 windows 10 pc’s, 1 a physical pc (I’ll refer to as pc 1) and one a virtual install on VMWare (I’ll call pc 2).

PC1 is windows 10 enterprise and PC2 is windows 10 Pro, both have intel x550-t2 network cards in although the virtual pc shares the card (but the issue happens over 1gb network as well but at slower speeds) and they are currently directly connected via cables through a patch panel but not a switch (this does also happen though the switch but at slower speeds, I do have an old 10gb switch I could try but haven’t as of yet).

When I copy a file either to PC1 from PC2 or the other way around it goes slowly (approx 11mb/s) regardless of which drive they are copied from or too, I have tried both spinning rust and nvme on both ends, however when I open task manager on PC1 (where I initiate the copy from in each scenario) it jumps to a much faster speed of the sort I would expect.

Am I doing something stupid, or is my pc infected or something else, I have Sophos Home installed and it doesn’t find anything bad.

Thanks for any help

Mark

Unsure if it matches your issue, but I had what sounds like a very similar issue. I had to disable receive side scaling in Windows

Do you have that option? Give it a quick go and see if you see any changes

I also turned on flow control on my switch for those links, helped a lot. Now I get the full 10Gb no matter what. Interestingly, the issue was only present for speed tests and file copies, an iperf3 test showed full bandwidth

Brilliant, that solved the issue.

Thanks for the help

Ok, now I am even more confused, it worked for a bit then went back to as it was but the setting hasn’t changed.

I think I’ll try reinstalling windows, it has been a while since I installed and I usually reinstall every 3-6 months anyway.

My experience with Windows and 10Gb networking has been less than great

That’s weird the issue came back after a few days, is flow control on both sides or just the 10G side?

Flow control is enabled on both network cards, the weirdest thing is I had the issue using the onboard nic on pc1 and a dual 1gb intel card on pc2 so I don’t think it is because is is 10gb.

Cool, I will give all them setting a play and see how it goes.
