I have a friend who is trying to use the website https://evolve.elsevier.com. Whenever she tries to access it, the padlock in the url bar at the top of chrome has a red slash through it and when you click on it it says that there is an issue with the website because it uses TLS 1.2, and then something about AES 128 bit encryption yada yada yada. I'll try to get the exact wording tomorrow. So basically what happens is the website loads, but she is automatically logged in as "Anonymous" and when she clicks on anything, a pound sign is added to the end of the url and nothing happens. And she is using windows 10. So any input would be great, sorry this is so rushed the internet at my university shuts off in a little while. Thanks.
You usually get that red slash if one of the certificates used by the website is using SHA-1, it shouldn't be related to your other issues though. If you can get the exact wording of the error then that might help.
Your friend should try deleting cookies and if that doesn't work try a different browser.
Its because that it not a secure connection. And the newest version of Firefox and Chrome block it for security reasons. I ran into the same issue with my schools website because anything hosted by GoDaddy only uses 128 bit RSA keys. Pffft.
Anyway, if you want to go to the website go to the about://config in chrome or ff and search for RSA, and you will want to turn the RSA 128 to False and SHA1 128 (or 256) to False.*
*Try to only enable this for that site, as if you leave that feature permanently disabled then you will always accept weak connections.
