just saying... if we hate just about everything people are selling to us... we should just build it ourselves the way we like it. and yes I do understand what an arduous task this would be, but i think the benefits out way any argument you can make against it.
But this implies that there is something wrong with current Linux-distros, which (in my opinion) is not the case. I think the TekSyndicate is just doing fine with promoting the process of learning.
We should focus on how we can enhance the situation there, if you ask me. :)
@Logan @wendell @DeusQain +1 to TekLinux OS. What would be awesome is if it came with support for broadcomm and Killer wifi enabled, and a decent palm-rejection for laptop trackpads!
While true, it would nonetheless be awesome if a TekLinus OS did happen.... particularly with @wendell 's insights!
sometimes when things arent going the way you want them to you just have to start over. I do believe that linux is trying really hard to make things amazing. but as long as there are so many different distros. and all of them hating people who use the others then how far can we really go before Microsoft or some other company phases us out. We need more than one linux distro. obviously we need competition to see improvement. which is why Microsoft and apple are not getting any better... linux just isn't providing competition like it needs to. what we need is 3 or 4 linux distros where we can drop everything else and just work on those 4 OSs.
each linux distro is a standalone OS but they are all built for separate purposes. we need a unifying purpose.
I've had broadcom working fine in distros with newer kernels and/or driver managers. Manjaro, Korora, Fedora, Ubuntu 15.10
If beibian is a thing I don't see why we can't have our own distro lol problem is getting people to actually do it and keep up with it
I don't currently have broadcom, but Killer yields no result in any distro on my Alienware 17 R2 (2015, GTX 970M). I am in the process of ordering an Intel 7265 card to swap out the Killer. I cannot live without Linux.
Great profile pic, by the way? Are you into counterculture music too?
Why, when there is Arch? That should be nerdy enough, no? Suggest a Tek Syndicate wallpaper...
TekOS based on Debian / Ubuntu could be doable.
The idea would be cool, adding all the virtualization tools needed and what not.
But ofc it will take allot of time and afford to put it together and to maintain.
Or, how about a slightly Wendellized version of Arch? That should be awesome! TekArch!
I think your approach will just result in another distro:
But nonetheless I welcome your motivation!
I don't think that Linux is running into major problems, if nothing unforeseeable with a great impact happens to the linux community as a whole. (A Comet destroying earth for example)
The amount of distros is maybe something that "wastes" energy, but it is also the reason why Linux will be very robust against "external stressor" which could constrain a future existence of Linux. Windows on the other hand is only a viable option as long as Microsoft is doing well and is improving the OS accordingly to the Hardwarelandscape and other Operating Systems.
From that point of view we have to do nothing to secure the situation. We can only build on it and improve it further.
Then you have to ask the quastion: what is it that you want to improve:
- Do you have configuration Issues with the hardware?
- Are the available desktop enviroments / window managers really bad?
etc.
A lot of this stuff is often resolved by:
- Getting more support from companies (or good backward engineering groups)
- learning what other people tried and try it yourself
Only after considering this you can really think about doing something different of some importance
You are right that some linux-forums out there are full of asshats, but we should only see this as a motivation to build a welcoming community here. And we should encourage learning and reason.
Back to your TekOS idea: I would recommend to explicitly specify the problems that you want to solve first. I bet most of it will be usability stuff (=> improve DE/WM) or configuration for a specific purpose (gaming? => Own distro with a certain set of preconfigured stuff?).
But if you promote learning and the "build your own" mentality you will see, that it will be rather hard to find a common denominator for this problems.
I optimized my OS so heavily to my demands that different systems feel like I had lost a limp or were asked to not use my eyes or something similar. But I bet there are people who would vomit a lot if they had to use my system.
Could also be an option.
Basicly you can use any distro as a base.
The issue I do see would be with what components we use. We have a lot of people usig many different distros
maybe its just simpler to choose a distro to get behind and then develop a Tek syndicate theme pack including icons, wallpapers and GTK/QT themes that can be torrented along with some choice tracks to go into the music folder ?
Linux distros are like cars, you need cars to get from a to b, but we have unique cars cause we can... +1 for TekLinux OS
I would be down for creating some UI options
I wouldn't use a TekLinux OS. why? cause we probably wouldn't be able to use Adblock
/s
like two packs, one flat grey / black like the forum theme ( i have a tek syndicate start menu icon :P ) and maybe a pixel art one ?
Yeah, a pixel art one could be cool! already have some cool ideas!
