So Western Digital just announced surveillance-class hard drive line called WD Purple. The drives are directed at small businesses and companies and are made for the high write volumes and long run times required for recording surveillance footage in the digital age.

It is just meant for high writes, for video recording, such as in a home security system.
I understand but I just feel like its horrible timing from a marketing standpoint to be releasing something like this when the country is currently in a minor state of panic over privacy infringement and surveillance. Also the greater majority of small businesses (or atleast what I think of as small businesses) are still using analog so I really don't see the place in the market. I mainly wanted a discussion of the real purpose of the drive because I really only see a very niche market of users that are both interested in ditching analog (which is ridiculously cheap, easy to maintain, and pre-existing in most businesses at this point) and yet don't already have an on-site server with business class drives that can handle the writes (wether by drive quality or by redundancy making it less important to have a drive made for high volume writes).
Oh sweet. Perfect for my zoneminder project. I don't think there is anything to be sensitive about. It's not like they are NSA signature series drives or something.
Yeah the title was more of a conversation starter the drives are actually kind of a cool concept... out of curiosity how are you liking zoneminder?
