HTC has the Uh-Oh protection and I’ve got it with my M9. So far I have been able to do a lot of customization, but want the little extra that rooting offers (also it could help me with battery life and annoying updates for stuff I don’t use). However I have Verizon and there is no way for me to root my phone. If my phone got in an “accident” and I used the Uh-Oh protection, then could it be possible to receive a non-verizon M9 which would then be possible to root? I thought about asking HTC support, but I think they’d see what I’d like to do.
if your carrier locked the bootloader than you're just screwed, there's no way around it. I have T-Mobile and some phones do have the bootloader locked permanently. there's nothing to be done. If you want the best overall customizability and control with your phone to do as you please and be constantly updated. you're going to just have to stick with the Nexus Phones.
That's why I am wanting to know if the phone they send as a replacement will be through Verizon or if they send a M9 not connected to any carriers and I just take it to Verizon for them to connect it to my account.
i possibly couldn't tell you. HTC isn't the one that locks the bootloader, Verizon does, if they are sending you the phone and NOT HTC there's a good chance it could be locked.
Can't, if it isn't verizon branded it most likely does not have the proper lte and cdma bands if you got send a non verizon model. I'll have to check the bands later as I am on mobile.
Just contacted HTC about how getting a new phone works, specifically where it comes from and they said they send it to me directly. I'm going to contact Verizon and make sure they won't do any shady shit and defeat the purpose of this.
just make sure it isn't Verizon branded. if it's Verizon branded, you'll probably see a Verizon logo on the phone.
Great thinking, I didn't consider the LTE thing. This is from HTCs website on Unlocked vs Developer:
What is an unlocked HTC One M9?
It’s the same great phone as the HTC One M9, without customized carrier software or SIM restrictions, so you can use any carrier’s wireless SIM card.
