Hands down: Warcraft III The story of the campaign is still so god damn epic, and if you just want to have some arcade-ish fun, playing some funmaps is incomparably nostalgic. I love it for reminiscing about working hard on my micro to mess with the best in the base game. Also playing the first e.g. tower defense maps you've ever played, of which you almost certainly will have tried like three or four 3rd party remakes (moba is a distinctive term here), in the same engine wherein you first experienced this kind of game (mode) - it always brings me back and pleasantly reminds me of all those parties we had
also crown jewels like
Metal Fatigue there's never been a game like it, and it's always worth spending hours and days to get it running and communicating on every pc
Lego Racers 2 for everyone who did or does Lego
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic best RPG ever made - at least if you fandom Star Wars
Battlefield 2 I have yet to experience a massively strategic cooperation of this kind (between randoms) in another game, also best helicopter warfare ever - Masterpiece
Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory there's always time for a skirmish on Fuel Dump
Earth 2160 though this is by far the worst pre-online-only copy protection, I have yet to grasp the complexity of this strategy game. Whenever I have another session on this game, somebody tries out a new tactic that nobody else prepared for
Rainbow Six: Raven Shield maybe it's just me but for slow-paced tactical shooters with a big strategic element, this game is ranked #1 until today. If you bow around an edge in direct line of sight of an infidel you're either dead or skill level asian. Planning is necessary and rewarding. Best coop experience
Growing up on the PS2 i have a lot of favourites from that i keep replaying like Burnout 3 and Gran Turismo 3/4. However I still come back to replay some TES:IV Oblivion every couple of months. Everytime i boot it up i get sucked into the game and i always find that interesting.
Retro game worth playing I'd say to try out Jet Set Radio Future on the Xbox, The original Jet Set radio on Dreamcast was pretty cool and can be played on steam.
The game is about grinding sick rails while tagging up the city. You'll bump into other gangs and the authority that will try to stop you from do your activities :P
Sim City 4 and Rollercoaster Tycoon 2, hands down best games ever! Tony Hawks Underground 2 as well, from the console side, if not for the soundtrack alone.
Zax: The Alien Hunter - Under rated, SO AMAZING Icewind Dale I and II - You have to get over some weird design choices, the fact 90% of character builds are useless but so gooooood Siege of Avalon - if you find this game somewhere AND manage to make it work (I had to install so many vms with different configs and versions of windows) then play it play it play it. Best OST, best story line, so much depth, so unique Warlords series Heroes of Might and Magic Series C&C Red Alert II Majesty: Gold Edition - Such a unique mechanic and just so much fun <3 Red Faction AoE Series All sorts of NES and SNES games (Contra etc) Metal Slug <3 <3 <3
Or you can come watch my stream at https://www.twitch.tv/wolfelapiroko/ to see me play these or other retro games cough cough shameless plug I am so sorry cough cough
Joust Mike Tyson Punch Out, Arch Rivals, Pro Wrestling Killer Instinct, Mega Man X, Primal Rage Perfect Dark, 007 Golden Eye, Mario Kart Silent Hill, Twisted Metal, Soul Caliber Wolfensteine, Kings Quest, Doom, ...
Can not remember the name of the game, but... it is like the "new" Shell Shock, but it was on the Apple 2e.
Raptor: Call of the shadows Tyrian 2000 Those two always find a way to get on my computer. They both look amazing even fullscreen without filters. Pixels ftw Also the sounds and music of both games are great. Especially Tyrian
Super Contra - You've saved the universe. Consider yourself a hero. yaaaaaaaay. Duck Hunt - Bring your CRTs, y'all!
You can emulate all or most of the Legend of Zelda games on PC - get them all and play them all to death because they're amazing.
Except for Zelda CD-i. Don't play Zelda CD-i. I will come over to your house and fill your pillow with salt grinders.
007: Goldeneye on the N64. GE:Source counts, I guess. Still so much fun!!!
Super Mario RPG/Paper Mario/Superstar Saga. Mario Sunshine is also pretty fun and it's damn hard on some of the levels. The crew defines retro as 2006 and earlier, so I'll throw in Super Mario Galaxy as well, because under emulation, that game is absolutely fantastic.
A good retro-style game (not necessarily retro in age - the alpha came out in 2008) that I'll throw in is Dan-Ball's Stick Ranger. Very interesting, very challenging and often very infuriating game.
Is my list too mainstream? Sorry. Didn't really start hardcore PC gaming until a couple years ago. Before that it was mostly Pokemon, Zelda and Mario.
