I’m working on my new home server build and been using the i3-12100 but determined I need the bigger i7-12700 for a good VM all-in-one server with those 20 threads.
Looks like raptor lake i7-13700 will have 2 additional performance cores and a total of 24 threads - is it fair to assume that Microcenter or other major places that usually discount these CPUs may have the newest i7-13700 at the same price the i7-12700 sits at? ($320 and $350 for K model)
It depends on the urgency, and how soon you need a better CPU for your VM server.
I would expect that Raptor Lake would probably have a price hike over Alder Lake, however, we’d likely start seeing some discounts for ALD parts after Raptor Lake launches. If you can utilize the e-cores for your VMs, the extra e-cores from Raptor Lake may justify the increased prices, if Intel does decide to raise prices.
I think I still have 25 days to return my i3 CPU to amazon. Rumors say the announcement for Raptor Lake is coming in 2-3 weeks I think?
I could be CPU less for a month if needed, October 20th is the presumed date the new ones would be available. This would make sense if its common or expected for Microcenter or other places to discount a brand new CPU.
Honestly I haven’t followed previous CPU launches to see if intel/amd say a CPU is $400 MSRP then next day Mircrocenter somehow offers it for $320 within a few weeks of launch. Anyone know?
Raptor Lake is in all likelyhood coming out at end of october. That is ~6-7 weeks away.
The 12700 has 8p4e cores for a total of 20 threads, while the 13700 is rumored to have 8p8e cores for a total of 24 threads. Then again, so does the 12900 which would be $500 instead of $350.
If you can afford to wait I would see if I could get a 12900 deal on Black Friday, by then performance differences between Alder and Raptor lake should be obvious as well as pricing. That is 11-12 weeks off though.
