VPS vs. Buying Server

I've been using a VPS for about a year now and I think it's time to get my own hardware if it fits the price/time ratio. Over a year it cost me $180 or so to run a VPS with 2GBs and a 30GB SSD, but of course having my own hardware would last a while and I would be able to upgrade what I need. I'm looking at something with a starting price of $300 (small size, cheap, equivalent) then I'll pick and choose what I would like to upgrade, such as more ram and storage.

My main use for my VPS right now is just an array of webservers and 1 streaming server.

Let me know what you come up with!

On the hardware side, owning it is always better. However like in all my scenarios with a VPS, it's always been an issue of bandwidth. for what it's worth and what you get, a good VPS is pretty well worth it and probably less that what you would pay to put your own hardware in a data center, or even buy your own connection.

Getting a server colo'd is going to cost $40 - $100/month. Building your own can make sense if you're spending more than that on a dedicated server already.
