VPN speeds

I recently subbed to Express VPN to try it out and see what torrent downloading and netflix playback etc would be like. My 15Mbps connection dropped all teh way down to 5Mbps using openvpn on a DD-WRT flashed router. This was to much of a speed hit as my speeds not the greatest to begin with so after working with Express VPNs tech support (which was painstakingly slow since they only communicate via email) it appears thats the best speed I could get through their service using the above method. Ive read online that most people only suffer a 10-20% speed loss when using VPN but I saw a 66% loss. Will I experience these kinds of speed losses with any VPN using OPENVPN or was it most likely just something to do with that particular VPN service? ExpressVPN did offer one other solution to use a PPTP connection but I didnt try it because they said theres hardly any security built into that kind of connection. Now Im not trying to secure anything too important but I was a little put off by the way he made it sound like theres was little to no security at all using that kind of connection. Thoughts on using PPTP over OPENVPN?

Also is there any one particular VPN service that works better than the rest that I should look at for future VPN attempts?

I use OpenVPN and PIA, I suffer no loss in bandwidth.  I'm getting my full 75 mbps down when I use newsgroups.  As far as you interacting with your flashed router, I'm not sure what to advise you to do.

  • If you are using HTTPS everwhere or the like ~ disable/remove it.
  • You shouldnt be having that kind of decrease unless there is bulk overloading somewhere, have you / or do you have the ability to change servers? P2P traffic may also be restricted to a just a few servers that (chances are high) are in foreign countries with relaxed laws.
  • Only use PPTP as a last resort.
  • Check out PureVPN, dedicated p2p servers, fast (well for me here in Australia anyway), online support and 5 devices per account. Is built on openvpn as well.

Have you tried running the openvpn client on a computer rather than the router? It could just be that the router isn't fast enough to handle the bandwidth when it's being encrypted. Also have you tried using a different server?

Thanks for the responses guys, Sorry Im not familair with HTTPS everywhere so I have no idea. If its a piece of software or somethign that has to be set up manually then the answer would be no. I dont believe they had any specific servers that were for P2P traffic only but I did try 3 of the closest servers to me. I have not tried running openvpn on the computer although I did try just running the VPN software on a single PC and disabling the VPN in the router. Same result. Im not sure how to run OPENVPN on my PC but my router is a Netgear WNDR4000 if anyone is familair with that router.

>If you are using HTTPS everwhere or the like ~ disable/remove it

That would have no effect on his usecase, and for https you should see no noticeable drop in performance anyway.

Its not your router and not your PC. The problem you are having is the VPN service you selected. They probably limit per customer bandwidth to 5 mb/s to save on server space per end user.

My speeds through a vpn drop by 75% with it  - i cant explain it either but it happens.

This is on PIA.  I'm paying for 150/20.

At my university I get 400 megs wired and about 80-120 with PIA on, no matter which server. It's quite strange, but 80 is still fast enough for me. :D
