VPN speeds suck. Is router to blame?

So I have now tried two VPN services, Tor guard and PIA, and both at same results both slow down my 60Mbps WIRED connection (get 50 on good day) to around 5 mbps. Normally I wouldn't think this is a router issue because I'm using the provided software which others on forums have stated as being faster than setting up at the router level. My router is an older linksys wrt54gs. Have been looking for a replacement but because it still functions don't want to absolutely get rid of it unless I have to.

Doubt it would be the router in this instance, VPN connections will drop your bandwidth due to their nature.

VPNs use processor power for encryption and decryption of the packets. Generally, without the use of dedicated VPN modules, all routers and PCs process the encrypted packets through the CPU.

So, if you are not using the VPN software directly on the router, then it's your PCs fault or the client's fault for the speed you achieve through the VPN connection, OR the PVN provider throttles you down.

Ok so my system is an AMD a10 7800 with 16 GB DDR3 @2133

Here's PCPP link if you need more details: http://pcpartpicker.com/b/3xBPxr

If it is my PC, what steps could I take to fix it? I had tried using OpenVPN to no success. I would try a proxy but those are mostly geared towards torrent clients and honestly have no need for torrents except for linux distros

Well, check your VPN software, configuration, etc. A10 should be more than fine for 50 Mbps with IPSEC.

Ok will do when I get home and update on status

I you haven't adjusted the MTU in the client - do so. Put it on like 1380 or 1400, so that you avoid fragmentation.

What is the most balanced VPN in your opinion (weighing in encryption and speed) i have been using IP hider pro for years but recently the speeds have dropped up to 40%.

UPDATE:Tried the MTU adjustment. Speeds stay at 5mbps. If I was getting about 20 I would be ok but fucking hell these things are a pain

Well, It's seems you are getting shaped on the server side. I can hardly believe your CPU can't handle 50mbps. Perhaps you can ask the VPN provider? I saw both PIA and Tor Guard claim "unlimited bandwidth" but who knows...

I've been hearing that ISP's are cracking down on VPN's by throttling the hell out of them. I went from 300+ mbps to 5mbps over the course of my year subscription to PIA. Noticed y'all haven't mentioned it, if VPN throttles have a work around please yell at me, I have been struggling with PIA for 3 months now

PIA connected:

edit: a second connected test while watching CPU usage via task manager (client did not exceed 5%, with flash and firefox pretty consistently using more.)

PIA not connected:

I use PIA's ruby-based client.

I pay 77USD for a 50mbps down/5mbps up connection. I -am- seeing some speed loss when using PIA, but not nearly as much as ya'll are describing, and from what I understand, Time Warner Cable is one of the sinister ISPs likely to pull that throttling of encrypted traffic crap (which I'm sure is entirely illegal- many people connect to work VPNs, especially employees of large companies. Like, say, General Electric.)

I want to say it may be you're connecting to a poor server, but since it's over two different services, this seems somewhat unlikely.

TL;DR I use PIA and don't have the described problem, sorry that I have no real advice for you.

TBH from those tests, the speeds you are getting are great for a VPN, just saying. I myself get about the same efficiency

No. Those speeds are terrible he should be able to get at least 80% of his bandwidth, so should you.

Try different servers. Also try different connection methods or ports. As mentioned ISPs will deliberately throttle connection sometimes. You might see improved speed connecting via SSH for example. A lot of providers provide those kind of connection options.

So my ISP is charter. And those guys are trying to act like they're the most consumer friendly ISP. IE no data caps we offer 60 where others offer 10. So for them to throttle is really shitty. I've played around with the setting and regardless of changes it is always at 5 mbps

EDIT: So found this reddit and this guy had same issues as me, he said he just switched routers and all was well. Thinking I might try the same.

If thats true, all my friends are getting fucked over too, as two of my friends us PIA, as do I, and we get around that speed

Sorry guys but I think you're just getting a bum deal in the US. My max speed in the UK is 76/18 direct to my ISP. However it's peak time now for usage so the europe results are a couple mbps down on my usual PIA results.

The server is saying London on each graphic because I didn't refresh the web page between each test.

UK London Server

Europe France Server

US Florida Server

US California

thats not bad but im just laughing at the miles for the server and it keeps saying london :D god dammit i cant stop laughing :*)

Of course when the data going under the Atlantic it has to stop at the coast pass through the MOD (Ministry of Defense) facility, get analysed, archived and sent on it's merry way. So yeah I guess that'll affect the ping a bit!
