VPN as related to The Tek 0096

I was happy to hear Logan mention VPNs and i hope he can make a good video covering the subject.

I already have a firm grasp on VPNs but I was wondering a few thing things anyway.

  • Does anyone know what VPN service Logan purchased (sounded recent)?
  • Does anyone here use OpenVPN on their own server? (if so whats your cost and performance)

I hope they cover something about OpenVPN (disadvantages and advantages) and a setup tutorial would be nice (i have only a basic understanding of how to get it going).

I have a  VPS with ramnode.com (128MB SSD OpenVZ) running Debian 6 32-bit with OpenVPN. Costs me $16.08 a year after a life-time coupon code.

I get about 15ms above my nominal latency. My bandwidth fluctuates based on my configuration and i've played with it so much i lost track of whats what but best case I got just about my full bandwidth. Right now i get about 65Mbps download and 11Mbps upload. My normal speeds to the same speedtest.net server are 75Mbps down and 11.5Mbps up.

If anyone was curious, i chose Debian 6 32bit as part of experimenting for performance at the suggestion of some random openvpn article i found... and based on what i found it does seem to offer some benefit... as does the fact its an SSD VPS
