Virtualization Homelab Server OS

Hello Everyone,

I have a question for those in the Virtualization Space, I currently am using ESXi 6.5 in my Home Lab on a couple of Whitebox X79 Machines.

A major issue I currently have is the is the lac-luster Drivers for Non-validated Hardware which is resulting is some pretty poor performance on my SSD’s

As a result I am looking at alternative Hyper-visor Infrastructure.

So my question is, what are your opinions on the different Hyper-visor platforms? And what would you use in a Homelab.

I’ve been a total slut for hyper-V honestly… ESXI looks great but having everything together in a familiar format is nice. I do want to try it but my CUPs for my main server are not supported. If I were to upgrade I’d try.

I would go Hyper-V… I am just pissed off with all of Microsoft’s Shit… as a result I have just about migrated everything I run to linux and bsd

KVM (with libvirtd/virsh)

If you have small amounts of storage (less than 50T) ZFS will help you virtualize storage. Otherwise - Ceph.

++ to KVM and libvirtd. Especially if you’ve nearly entirely migrated away from Windows.
