i want snapshot in vm... thing is i need to be able to operate of a single rig
so the hosts screen and keyboard and mouse well hell i can get a second kb/mouse but the same scree, even if off seperate input that works for me but if i have to remote in then im screwed
The Snapshots VBOX creates are abit different, basically they say hey well just not overwrite these old disk positions, or something like it. rather then backing up the data, they just tell the system to write different places on your disk. Your data isn't backed up, and it is not screenshots of your gaming experience. What happens is more or less, is the machine tells your VM harddrive, to write at a offset (i guess), So if imagine you're editing a word document, it contains all your favorite pornsites. You wanna be able to revert to this old state where all your pornsites are just umphhh, i mean these are just your fav sites. Then VBox tells the file system to save any editing of the file in a new location of your harddrive, but remebers the old location, And will allow you to revert to your old state, once you kind of agree you got a granny, and tentacle porn habit to kick(Add minecraft at your own volition). Meaning Vbox just reverts the file to a state where redtube, pornhub, and youporn only were in the file. And this is done instantly cause you're not operating 250gb files, but rather locations on your physical hardware, in your host machine. Imagine creating an back of windows on a usb drive at the second you installed it, it takes a good 20 minutes to create a return point using their back up function. IF that was a VM you could snap shot it and do what ever, then press a button and pretty much instantly revert to it's initial installed state.
any retard can press print screen and get a "screenshot" of a game
i want the ability to instantly reload my entire operating system to my last saved snapshot in the case of some catastrophic failure or forced driver update
i get the difference between a COMPLETE SNAPSHOT 50+gb (something like that id like to auto run once a month or so) vs JUST the data that has been modified snapshot (something like that id run after each shutdonw period and keep one or two old copies)
yea im just kind of perplexed at wth kurama was actually asking. I mean snapshots and keyboards, and secondary screens. Figured id explain indepth what a snapshot was, and kind of etch it out, it is not a screen shot of you fav game, or a wierd way of making a save game including your whole OS.
He want's to lock Winders into a little box so he can play his games on linux and install all the porn viruses on it. Then if the porn virus breaks it he can revert to an older snapshot.
hey you got a point there, reverting my porn viruses to a save point would be awesome!. Tommorrows goal "Create a porn VM"! but yea i get the point if only they could intoduced this to real life Oses, it would rawk
Wow, I step away from this thread for 10 seconds! There is certainly some crazy stuff suggested. Thanks for all the interesting suggestions. I'm going to try proxbox when i can find either a spare USB stick or a DVD drive to burn it to. As much as I would love to mess around with GPU passthrough I sadly won''t have a spare GPU to try it with as I really am running this on an old server, an HP proliant (can't remember the exact product number).
If you do make that sound dampened server cabinet do link it, I would be very interested to read it. I might be getting my hands on an old rack at some point so it would definitly be good to see how you quieten it without disrupting airflow.
Again for user firendlyness just throw a Vbox system on your machine, beware the learning curve maybe be semi steep if you wanna use the console to launch each machine, but running a linux server which uses like 50-100mb give and take some memory, and letting you VMs just rule that environment rocks. There is a Html release for Vbox forgot it's name, but it kind of makes life alot easier at a very low cost resource wise(since it is opensource). Basically it makes a html based setup of your VMs.
As I am just planning on using this to play around with I will probably try both, and any other thing thats suggested, to see which I prefer so I know and have a little experience if I ever have something I catually want to get done in the future. A side note, can you remote into a vm through ubuntu server? Or am I looking at using something like putty?
Since it is not gaming VMs. Go for Vbox, you dont need hardware passthrough. IF that is needed seek out the pugent systems guide for how to. ATM on my windows desktop im running a linux desktop to limit the resources available to googles software(youtube, chrome), since they reeeeeealy want alot of ram. but it runs really well through VBox. this is gui though mess around with the console, and once you get some service running you wont ever think gui + linux ever again. Linux is majorly console, which you can desktop to if needed.
