Views on Google Photos

So basically I would like to hear everyone's opinion on Google Photos. I've read, watch and listen to people talking about Google photos and everybody seem to be loving it. And its very compelling mainly because its free and there is no limit on how many photos you can back up or upload.

I really want to enable the service but what worries me is the privacy. Because with this Google will basically have all of my information. Some might argue that Google already has my information since I'm using Gmail, Google Drive and so on. But have you seen the Google search in Google Photos, its awesome and scary at the same time.

So yea. It would be awesome to hear everyone's view on the topic.

The search features is nothing more than recognition, its quite good, and possible better than the competition. Either way any photo service you use will have the same potential privacy drawbacks unless you roll your own.

What do you use right now?

Its worth noting as well the its not unlimited free backup, its unlimited free backup up to 16megapixels.

If you want some online service to store your photos you can look into mediagoblin its a Free Software media platform, so its open and anyone can use it, and its been coming along very nicely. The drawback? Your not the product so to speak, so you either have to host it yourself; or use one of the already available public mediagoblin sites, which have the same drawbacks as google photos, or flickr etc.

Either way any photo service you use will have the same potential privacy drawbacks unless you roll your own.

Yea you got a point. So are you using the service? If no, are you planning on using it anytime soon?

I let google back up all my photos and videos, the privacy of my meme pictures and cinematic shots of USB chargers does not bother me that much, but pictures i want to keep private i just store on my own NAS(there are not many, mainly my pr0n)

Well Google Photos back ups all of the photos you took with your smartphone yea. Lets say you took pictures of places and people. So once uploaded. They (Google) can distinguish the places you have been and the people you've met and that is what bugs me or kinda bugs me.

I don't take that much pictures of humans, so that is not such a huge deal for me, and location they already know because... well, there is GPS on nearly every android device
