Who here thinks video games have the bets soundtracks, I mean theres crysis 3, far cry 3, crysis 2, mass effect, modern warfare, halo, deus ex, shadow of the colossus, skyrim, just all these games have sutowel made soundtracks but movie soundtracks are just boring, doesn't fit the mood, un original and some times they don't even have soundtracks while almost all games have a soundtrack and they are usually pretty good even if the game is crappy.
Both deus ex games (excluding invisible war) have great soundtracks. Amnesia has amazing sound design. Half-Life 1 and 2 have great soundtracks. I also think Freelancer, the 2003 space sim rpg action adventure arcade shooting best game in the world had amazing soundtracks and sound in general, you could feel the tension rising when engaging your enemies, you could feel the loneliness of being deep into a meteorite belt or debris field, where you can hear faint metal screeches and cargo piece flying around and distant radio chatter.
There's plenty of great movie soundtracks, for example, 2001 a space odyssey, blade runner, matrix, most tarantino movies, etc.
Incomplete without mentioning Assassins Creed 2 OST. It was sublime..
Some of my favorites are Superbrothers: Sworcery & Sworcery EP, FTL: Faster Than Light, Super Hexagon, Journey, Metroid Prime, Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time, Awesomenauts, Cave Story, Black Mesa, Hotline Miami, Splice, and Tiny & Big in Grandpa's Leftovers
I would disagree with video games having the best soundtracks. Music is very subjective. And people who spend a lot of time gaming will find video game music better.
And I also have my fare share of favourites. Black Mesa, Dustforce, Frozen Synapse, Deus Ex & Human Rvolution, Doom to name a few.
I agree and disagree at the same time. Yes it is subjective as T6kke said; but as well film is at many times much more constricting when it comes to the creative process of soundtracking. Video games are generally more open to music, You can change styles, instruments, and even theory at a drop of a hat, while film you are forced to play within the theme and if you try to diverse the sound, usually it fails. I'm a big fan of music in general, i love it all. Learned to play as many instruments as i could when i was in school and i've composed music of my own, i still make music for fun. When i learned soundtrack pieces from film, game, tv shows, etc. i found video games to be more variant than others. This is were i disagree with the main point saying that film soundtracks are dull, have you listened to the soundtrack that Hanz Zimmer has done with inception, man of steel, dark knight, Crysis, etc. It's not about film being dull, it's about the composer. I'm pretty sure everyone loves the main theme on 28 days later that John Murphy dished out. What about Henry Jackman with X-Men: First Class, or Antonio Pinto with the Senna Documentary and Snitch. I love Trent Reznor's soundtracking style for film, he did some great work with The Social Network. Daft Punk with Tron, it did so great that just about every commercial company adopted it and you can't ever deny Ennio Morricone. I can go on with great soundtrack pieces.
