Video Editing Cores vs Threads

Hey Logan, can you explain the difference between cores vs threads and how that effects video editing and rendering. I know when it comes to gaming an 8 core AMD cpu won't blow away a quad core Intel, but when it comes to video editing, why does a quad core, 8 thread i7 perform better than an 8 core amd. I have trouble understanding the difference between cores and threads and I feel like there are probably other people who do too.

Cheers,

Chris

The biggest advantage intel has over amd when it comes to video editing is quicksync.

With that in place it can encode / decode video like a monster.

AMD's really aren't cores they are moduals. A core is a thread but a thread isn't always a core. Hypthreading makes each core have two threads, so a hyperthreaded quad core has the same number of threads as amd's 8 modual cpu. Same way a hyper threaded dual core and true quad core have the same number of threads as amd's 4 modual cpus. Of course real cores will always preform better than hyper threads or moduals it also costs more.
