VHS To Digital

My Parents (Since they are Really Bad at Tech) Want me to convert their old VHS Tapes to digital formats.

I Don't know much about video formats (Composite, Component, HDMI, etc.) so I bought this: http://www.avermedia-usa.com/AVerTV/product/ProductDetail.aspx?Id=498

I then found out it only accepts component input when VHS is composite.

Then I bought these two (because straight composite to component is $500 +)

http://www.amazon.com/Mini-Composite-CVBS-Converter-1080P/dp/B009A6PJKQ/ref=pd_sxp_grid_i_0_1

http://www.amazon.com/Kanex-Pro-HDRGBRL-Component-Converter/dp/B00BW0XXZ6/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1392331907&sr=1-2&keywords=hdmi+to+component

They didn't work.

I don't know if they are both broken or if its only one, but the aver media still wouldn't get a signal.

So my question is, what is the best way to convert VHS to a digital format without quality loss?

Is a capture card the best way to do this in the first place?

I don't mind returning everything so i'm open to any solution.

Thanks -Aeolus4444

This may belong in some other forum. I'm new to the site, so i just posted it here.

this . maybe ?

Got this for my grandfather to convert old VHS and Hi8 tapes to digital: Hauppauge USB-Live2

Works fine for it's intended purpose.  I was afraid I might need to get him a separate program for editing, but I was surprised with how capable the included software was for the basics.  Very user-friendly and easy for simple cuts, transitions, and titles, which is really all he needs it for.

Both of those are viable options, but i'm worried about quality loss, maybe the HD PVR? (model 1) i looked into that when i was buying the aver media, but was sold on the aver media, because I didnt need to use a computer with it.
